WON'T START/THEFT SYSTEM??? HELP!!!

HELP!

My 96 Auto Cavalier Convertible won't start.

When I turn the key, NOTHING HAPPENS... NOTHING! But with the key in the run position I could start it by touching the 2 terminals on the starter.

Now when I try to start it that way, it fires for a second and then cuts off and will not fire again unless I turn the key off and then back to the run position.

It will fire for a second and then cut off again.

My friend was saying it could be the theft control system shutting off the injectors...

Does anyone know anything about this?

How can I fix it so it will start like normal with the key?

HELP!

You may need a new lock system or repair the wires if thats the case. Inside your lock cylinder there is a little chip that measures resistance with the key in so you cant hot wire it. If someone did hot wire it, it would start for a sec. then shut right off. So what you need to do is pull out your lock cylinder and make sure those 3 wires are connected. 1 wire is 12v one is ground and one is signal i believe. If it doesn't have the correct resistance it wont let the car run. I ran into this problem on my car when trying to install remote start. I ended up putting 2 resistors in, instead of buying the 50$ module. Good-luck!

I had a problem like that on my 97 vert. The cluster was bad. Are you throwing any codes? Also, is your theft light on when you go to start the car?

Bad cluster??? Do u mean instrument cluster?

I haven't checked for codes yet.

Most times the theft light is on; Sometimes it is not.

I have been starting it by jumping the terminals on the starter with the key in the run position. If it does not start on the 1st try I have to turn the key off and back to run to try again.

I was going to change the cylinder out but someone told me that if u do that then the dealer has to re-code it or something...

Any advice is appreciated.
