temp gauge

ok... this is the second time in two weeks i have had this happen. you know how when you turn off your car all the gauges go back down? well for some reason last saturday and tonight my temp gauge went past the 260 mark. last saturday i noticed it and checked all the fluids and they were all good. then i checked everything else, things seem to be working alright, so i let the car sit all night. when i went back outside sunday morning and started my car the temp gauge needle was in the way of the speedometer needle. and everything was cold.

well today i noticed it starting to happen again. does anyone know what is wrong, or how much it will cost to fix it? is it something i may be able to fix myself or will i have to take it to gm?

well, when you turn off the engine, it is still hot. so the heat will "soak" and the temp sending unit reads that. There is no colant circulating to cool the engine, but the is no combustion, so it won't build heat either. As far as why the needle pegs out I couldn't tell ya.

yeah but when i turn off the car and it is at 195 and it stays there, there is no reason for it to shoot past 260 when i turn it back on more than 3 ours later

I wonder if the temp sending unit is messed up. Anyone?

first i wouldnt worry about it "shooting" up that high. it sounds like you have a bad sensor causing it to read that high. get a volt meter and test yout ect sensor, its right next to the coolant tank on the front left side of the motor
