well i got to thinking your more likely to pass smog when the engine is hot so wouldnt it run hotter if i put premium fuel in it a couple days before i get it smogged? seems like it would work to me or atleast help. I was also gonna put some of that guarentee to pass smog stuff also.
Well first read the bottle of that gaurenteed to pass crap. It clearly states that the car is gaurenteed to pass as long as its in perfect running condition and all the smog equipment hooked up. So basicly they gaurentee you'll pass if your car is perfect. But if it were perfect you wouldn't need the stuff. Its a scam.
Anyway why do you think your doomed to fail.

i just have alot of miles.. i think can pass. but that stuff does get your car hotter which makes it pass easier
Old school trick if your interested. Get it below a 1/4 tank stop off at Right-Aid or any such establishment and pick up several bottles of 90 proof Isopropal Alcohol, about 4 of the big bottles should do. Dump them into the tank and go do the testing. Alcohol burns cleaner then gas does, but for extended periods it can hurt the aluminium in the fuel system but for your sort little need it will be fine.
This is the only trick that would allow my Trans-Am to pass.

Alcohol... gotta love it, mand u must have gotten alot more power out of it. and it will also eventually screw up your engine. lol
No, No more power its just cleaner burning. And again No, It won't hurt your engine
at all. If you use it alot it will damage the aluminum in the fuel system but for small amount that he would be useing and for such a brief amount of time it won't hurt anything at all.

Burning hotter you say? You aware that higher temps cause oxides of nitrogen (NOx) that can fail if in higher concentrations? I wait until I'm down to 1/4 tank, dump in a system cleaner, hopfully with Techron, and drive it up a few LONG hills -- pedal mashed to the floor. Filling it up all the way, and I'm done. I'm sure to get flammed for this, but it what works for me. My 2.2 still runs fine, not burning oil, great compression, fuel economy near new.
Go haul @$$ on the interstate, then immediately go to the smog station and get in ASAP.
My brother's Audi 5000 passed after doing this, but I am unsure on which numbers that failed in the first place. The smog person told him to do that.
I have actually heard great storys of that stuff that helps your car to pass smog test. High octane will not help though, it may not have a complete burn will give excess HC and CO out the tail pipe.
Speed costs... How fast ya wanna go??

Using high octance in a car with a low octane rating wont help you, however all of it wont burn and it will leave carbon depiosts on your valves.

Most everything has been said already.
Use regular grade gas. It burns easier.
Warm up the car. Make sure you put a load on the engine. This heats up the cat and the cat loves the heat. It works more efficient.
Didn't say burning hotter I said burning cleaner big difference.
Good luck which ever way you go.

alcohol burns slower as well as cleaner, so danger to exhaust valves may occur, nox is usually present during a lean condition not always a hot condition. and a hot catalytic converter will always outperform a cold one. alcohol is also good for removing condensation from the tank. i've used methyl but isoporal should work.
the only thing high octane is really good for in a stock / near stock ride is allowing more advanced timing, which the PCM does on it's own, i've seen 46 degrees @ wot.
CAR GODS MADE THE 1.6 SOHC TO MAKE US 2.2 OHV GUYS FEEL BETTER.
Oh my GOD somone whos actualy heard of this (thank you) Damage would be if you used it for prolonged periods of time or ran only alcohol, but a mix and for temp use its ok.
But its nice to see someone else who has heard of this.

I don't see why the alcohol would hurt your engine if you only use it once a year (or every other year in some states) for emissions testing. After the test, go fill up with regular gas and dilute what little bit is left in your tank.
Thank god they only do a visual test in the county I live in.

Im lucky. We dont have to do this at all. Long live Michigan.
^^^ same here in Canada
Yeah...what Rob S said is right....high octane in a low octane vehicle is not good.
High octane fuel is made to "not" burn. Its used to stop detonation...as in pre-ignition. Thans why with higher compression you need higher octane. Also for advanced timing.
As you probably know....you have to compress the mixture of fuel and air for it to ignite with a spark(gas engine). If it compresses to the point of ignition before the spark...thats called pre-ignition/detonation. bad on pistons valves...etc. To stop this more octane is used, which makes the fuel harder to ignite, which lets it be compressed more. If this mixture is not compressed to the right pressure before the spark is introduced, than not all the fuel will burn.
Anyway...the point is...if you don't have the compression to get the fuel to the point it requires to ignite and give a complete burn you will have leftovers. These leftovers are Carbon Monoxide...the very stuff they are checking your car for...among other stuff.
And as Rob S said...it will leave all sorts of nasty deposits all over your top end.

You shouldn't worry about it till you fail.
I had to get an extension because I knew I was going to fail with a bad pre-cat 02.
It's replaced and everything is happy now.

i ran high ocatne and started throwing codes with it....if that makes any sence?
If it doesnt break then you didnt drive it hard enough!
I drive an automatic, I'll race you... 1 hand and 1 foot.
