Looking to tackle this job. Looking for any info you can provide me. First, is their a DIY way to drain and contain the coolant without taking it to a shop? Secondly, what is the proper amount of compressor oil to use? I appreciate any advice you guys can give me. Thanks.

There is a $32,500 fine if you get caught venting refridgent into the air. You must have a shop recover the refridgent and then go home replace the part, then bring it back, they evacute the system and recharge it for you.
There is a sticker usually on the hood or fender of the car with the amount of refridgent needed, I dont know off hand.
Secondly why do assume the compressor is bad? I'm very good with A/C work/problems so let know why you think the compressor is bad.

also if u want the refrigerant u can take it to a shop/dealrship i'msure they could dispose of the refrigerant. but i believe you have to be Licensed to get the R-134a . i think i remember my instructor saying something like that..sry for double post

The A/C has not worked in the car since i bought it. It started making a bad bearing noise in the area of the compressor recently. When I went for inspeciton the mechanic told me my compressor was about ready to fall apart. I took one from a junkyard spun it to make sure it pumped air and was hoping to replace it in my car. I will have to take it to a garage and get it perged. Is there something else I should check. Thanks for your help.

replace the compressor is the obvious but theres also a reason why it went bad. could be as complex as another part of the a/c system was malfunctioning or simple as it was just old and worn out.

Well if another mechanci said it was bad, it may very well be. Just be sure to check belt tension when reinstalling it, to tight of belt can damage the compressor among other things.
