My roommate has a 2004 2.2 and I need some info. I changed the oil but got the wrong filter. I sinned and continued without changing it out. I got the correct filter element now and was wondering what size socket is needed to take-off the cap? Secondly can I change this element without changing the oil again? Thanks for your info.

It is a 32mm but you need a short socket, when you start unthreading it the long socket hits the manifold.
You can use a wrench, if you remove the intake. Don't use to much for it plastic versus metal, we all know who wins.
1 1/4 I think, dont take it as gold. I have an 04 to and I think it is 1 1/4

32mm does the trick. I work at Jiffy Lube, and like ive said many of times on here, we do them almost weekly, and we have a socket and speed handle (speed wrench if you will) to do it, no busted caps or anything yet. Just make sure the little O-Ring on the old filter is still there when you take it off, and make sure there's one on the new filter. The Ecotec is actually one if the easiest oil changes Ive ever done. And about changing just the filter, sure, just make sure the oil is topped off from any oil you might have lost removing the filter.
thanks for the info fellas.
