Temperature fluctuations

Hi guys,

I'm not in this forum too often, but I have been having crazy temp fluctuations lately. Last year my car overheated in the dead of winter on the coldest day of the year, for no reason. Then a few days later it did it again. And then a few days later it did it again. And then, it never did it again.

Since that time, my temps rise when moving around slowly in the city traffic. They also DROP to just over the first big notch on the temp indicator when crusing on the highway with the heat on full blast.

So tomorrow I'm replacing the thermostat, flushing the system out and putting new coolant in. Is there anything else I should check out? I can't afford to be without a car...btw I'm at 72k miles, never had a serious problem. And my alternator belt is kinda squeaky.

Make sure you get a new gasket with that new thermostat.
