ecotec electrical problem

Here is the issue. Drove home from work, parked and turned off the car. Went back out to go to school and the car wouldn't start. Starter wasn't clicking, car wasn't turning over. Turned the key to off, tried again, nothing. Then the lights wouldn't come on, even on the on position. I left if off, and tried again and it started.

Drove to the gas station and then tried to start it again and it failed. The car acted like it was dead, even the interior lights wouldn't come on. I would turn the key to the on position and the lights would come on, then turn off. A second try and the lights wouldn't turn on, even when I opened the door the roof lamp wouldn't turn on.

I checked the connections on the battery and they are fine. I waited again and tried to start the car and it fired up.

An odd occurance... the dying of the electrical system caused the clock on the radio to be reset each time. Yet it didn't clear the computer. I still had my CEL (p0107 and p0420 -map sensor and cat). Shouldn't the dead battery (or whatever) have reset the computer too?

WTF? This is irritating.

I forgot to add... on the way home, it was idling at 500rpms when I would kick it into neutral. Would have to tap the gas to get it up, but it would still rest at 500...

You say you have checked your battery connections, the next step would be to check the :-

Starter positive connection (often used as a terminal block for 12+ power to the systems)

and the main earth/chassis connection. (I think yours is under the battery tray.)

You would be making sure they are shiny clean on both points of contact and the connections are tight when remade.

Post back after you have done this so we can try to help if this doesn't fix it

The battery ground was bad, reconnected it and it's all good. So far at least. Should it happen again with the proper ground, I'll post again.

Thanks Alont
