1998 Cavalier 2200 Automatic
36,000 original kms...
The car runs fantastic....but when I have the engine idling in park...and only park....I feel/hear this wierd grinding grumbling sound through the firewall/brake pedal. No smells or loud sounds accompany it...just sort of a grumbling vibration...
The second I put it in any other gear...it goes away...the car runs quiet and smooth.
Any idea what this is. It is the 3 speed auto tranny
If u have after market mounts, it will do it. After i put mine on, at idle, she is kinda rough.
Mine does that too. Not a motor-mount style vibration, but a slight roughness. I assume (or hope) it's just somethign about the way the car is designed.

motor mount?
What?????
Okay, just to let you know the 2200 idles like a piece of s#@% out of the factory.
I need you to open your hood and try to isolate where the sound is coming from. Post back and I'll help you out more.

Yeah really, my 98 has 86k miles!
my 98 has 120K. I noticed this too it happens when i put it in park and the coast back alittle and gets caught by the tranny and it grinds kinda against the force of the trany holdin it

Its not something you can actually hear outside of the car...more of a feeling in the pedal combined with a slight grinding noise...glad Im not the only one
Yeah seems like it's a normal thing. Not to jack, but 36,000 km on a 98? I have 95k miles on my 98... do you only drive it at weekends? lol
oh wait, KILOMETERS, dunno what that is in thousands of miles, but .62miles=1km, so thats not too bad.
^exactly, KM is less than miles! mines a 97 and has 160000+ miles!
I think thats a natural thing. My 2000 cav with 42K miles on it does that too, and has been doing it since I bought it with 35K miles about six months ago. so I think that is just how the engine is design. That is the only thing I did not like when I bought the car, but you get used to it!

It was parkerd for several years. I runs like brand new...although I swear the 2200 engine never idled well from the factory. Driven 4 or 5 of them with a slight idle shudder.
I think it was just the way our cars were designed... they seem to idle low and rough. With my aftermarket mounts... the hood bounces in park, but as soon as it goes into gear, rides smooth.
Do you also find that when you release the gas pedal in drive the car barely moves forward....it really struggles (DOES NOT MISS) but doesnt want to idle forward without the gas pedal.
