spare key

Could someone tell me where I could get a spare key for a 2002 Cavalier.
Does it have to be at the dealership since our keys have a code on it?
Or can I have one made at any locksmith?
BTW I think I read in the owners manual that there is a pass code or something
incorporated into the key for the ignition to read or something.

You can get one made at any hardware store, none of our cars have codes on them, so they don't have to be programmed to the ignition of the car. Should cost like 2 bux to get one made.

An hour, , should take like three minutes to make one.

while you're at it. SOME places make a credit card key. they take a plastic card and its got a key in the middle of it. they cut the plastic to your key. its a one time use thing, but its great to have. a lot of people lock their keys in their car...but they normally have their wallet on them.

GO PATS!!!

i think you need to go to the dealer man, it has to be cut perfectly (factory specs) so that the passlock doesn't turn on.

The dealer uses the same machine as the local hardware store. Should only go to the dealer if you lose the keys altogether. They can run the VIN (with ID of course) and cut a key then and there, provided the locks haven't been changed.

not swaying off topic but the 3rd gen cavvies doesn't have the passlock II/anti-theft therrent right? i remember when i had my 98 malibu, which did indeed had one, if a bit of the key was either smoothed out or not thoroughly conneected into the ignition, the damn anti-theft kicks in and it would stall the car and i would have to wait for 15min for the system to turn off, and i'd had to play around with it again and hope the slots and corners of the key gets read, which was . imagine that happening on the worse days where i had to be in a rush or had an important place to go

If u ever loose a key or have no way of getting into your car, i was able to call the local dealer, and over the phone give them my Vin # and then they just asked some description on it and tried tricking by asking if it was blue. Once i got there(took the rents ride ) and then just showed them teh registration and my license and they had 2 keys made. since they had to have the key made using the VIN # is costs a lil more, got 3 made and it ran like $13. No bad considering paying for a lock smith or breaking in and fixing what i broke.

u could do the ghetto style with just using a piece of coate hanger. prolly gotta break loose a few adhesive spaces off the rubber seals thats is touching the window. but thats in the extreme, otherwise call AAA or do what manta z did, or carry an extra spare in your wallet, i do.

Either spare in the wallet, or even a magnetic holder hidden somewhere on the frame. the magnets will sometimes come off like my first one did, but that was when i hit a deer, but my new hasnt come off. its been there a year

Thanks for all the replies. So it is okay to get one made at any hardware store then?
What about the pass key issue or whatever it's called?

Just go tot the hardware store and give them the key to get cut, it WIll work, there is no passlock @!#$ to worry about. I have a walmart key that I was using in my 99 z-24 and it worked fine and I didn't have any problems with anything at all. Just go and get it cut.
