UPDATE: on why my car wouldnt start after swap!
Sunday, November 27, 2005 12:47 AM
a few days ago i posted about how my car wouldnt start after i did an engine swap into my 96 z24.

basically we did some more work on it, and here how things have gone:

on fridaymy brother and I pulled the plugs and checked them for spark. there was none. then we checked for fuel and compression and it had both. we found that the coils had power going into them, so we replaced the coils, but still no spark.

after much checking of wires, i had the car towed to the local mechanic i know. he diagnosed it for free, so its all good! and heres what he said:

-the crank and cam sensors DO NOT have power going to them.
-the ECU is not storing any codes
-there was a melted fuse in the panel under the dash

the problems are most likely caused by crossed wires or a bad ground somewhere in the wiring harness.

i just had the car towed home tonight, so im going to park it in my garage and over the next few days/weeks im going to pull the car apart and inspect the entire wiring harness, fix any broken or exposed wires and make sure everything is grounded out good.

i do have a few questions tho:

1) because the ECU isnt storing codes, does this mean the ECU is bad? is it possible i damaged the ECU when i damaged the rest of the electrical system?

2) is this was your car, where would you guys start first?

thanks!

I'm not sure on this, but logically thinking, i would start by looking at that burned fuse. I would where it goes and whether or not it runs into that ECU. Then I would check my grounds again. I wouls also go over all wiring in detail again and maybe have someone else double check it. I know after looking at things too long will make it seem correct and fool you. I usually walk away for a while then come back and recheck.
