Hi guys I was wondering if anyone can help. I unfortunanetly live in Montreal where our cars are constantly abused with salt and extreme tempertaures in the winter months. I wanted to protect the undercarriage with oil however in the GM Warranty they claim that any substance used to protect the undercarriage of your vehicule will void your warranty. iI was thinking to wait the 5 eyars and then protect it but that might be too long. I have a 2005 sunfire purchased in March. ANY IDEAS??
If GM says dont do it, I wouldnt do it. The people who designed your car know what they are doing.

That sucks that GM won't let you undercoat your car to prevent rusting. I lived in Montreal for nearly 4 years, and the salt totally destroyed both vehicles I had there. If you drive your cavalier in the winter, and aren't able to get it sprayed/undercoated, I suggest washing/waxing it very regularly (I mean religiously, inside and out, and including the undercarriage). Keeping it off the street would certainly help you out as well. I had to park both vehicles on the street when I lived in the ghetto. The driver's sides of both my cars were more rusty than the rest of the vehicle, which I attribute to vehicles and snow plows spraying that side with salty slush.
Maybe GM has some kind of rust protectant/undercoating that they could apply which would not void your warrantee? I thought they offered something like that to me when I bought my cavalier last spring. It doesn't hurt to ask them if they have a solution.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

for some reason i find this @!#$ hilarious
Well the rust thru warrenty is good for how many years? If it does rust its under warrenty and after that time do whatever you can to keep it from rusting.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
I work at a Daimler Chrysler dealership and I am the one who applies undercoating and rustproofing to the vehicles. There are alot of chrysler's that come in with a professional oil spray (ie. "Krown") and as long as they didn't purchase our undercoating....The Krown didn't void anything. Just my opinion though
i work at a ford and chrsler dealrship too, and i too (unfortunately) am the undercaoing/rustproofing dude. we use steel shiled, and i believe they carry their own rust thru warrany
GM must prove that what you did caused the damage. in order to reject a warranty claim. the only thing they could say about under coat that i can think of is oil sucked in to the intake. which will never happen and maybe damage to a power window motor if you have them. im in ontario and my 05 cavalier is oil rust proofed and they havent said any thing to me.
id call the head office number in the owners manual and ask them to be sure

There is the key....GM wants you to buy their rustproofing solution, not anyone else. Take it to Krown.
Thanks guys, I did some research and found out every car does come out of the manufacturing plant with some sort of rustproofing, but I will call GM head office and find out more about this warranty crap. You pay so much money for a new car try to keep it's value up and they try to stop ypou from taking care of it.
What with all the cars and salt issue up there, you mean to tell me that not ONE car wash facility offers some sort of undercoat wash feature????
I have an '05 Sunfire and I live in Ontario. I got it undercoated with Krown, my dealership told me it doesn't void the warranty.
Don't ask me why, but used engine oil makes the best
"undercoating spray"....
Why wouldn't new oil be better ?....
You'd have to ask an old farmer....
He stores lots of equipment outdoors and fights rust
just like any car owner....

Amen! I say undercoat the car.

I was at Canadian Tire today, and there was a big poster advertising their undercoating stuff, and in big letters at the top it said "Will Not Void Your Manufacturers' Warranty"

Keep it's value up? That cracked me up. Sorry, but it is a J and there isn't really anyway to keep it's value up.
Dont use oil. Why dont you just go to the parts store and buy General Purpose grease in a can, get a paint brush and paint any vulnerable spots. By the time winter is through, most of it will have come off from car washes and salt anyway. Besides, how will GM ever know that you lubed up down there?? just wash it clean!
