Excessive window fogging??????
Friday, November 18, 2005 8:48 AM
So I just picked up a 2001 cavalier base model. It has 104k on the odometer. It is a standard base model with the old school crank down windows. I live in MN and the problem I am having is very excessive fogging on the windows. I can not drive the car more than 5-10 minutes without the windows fogging up. By the 15-20 minute mark the windows are so fogged up that I cant see out anything but the middle of the windsheild. This is even the case with the defroster running on full power the entire time. I have tried just about any cobination of HVAC settings I can think of to try and keep the fog down. The only way I have been able to get around this is to crack both windows. This tends to get a little cold since it was 19 degrees this last week. I guess I am hoping this is not normal in the cavalier and someone here might have a idea as to what might be causing this?

does it have ac? and doees it work? if it has ac and the dryer isnt working it can fog windows more by blowing more humid air onto windshield.

Yes, it does have A/C. From what I can tell in the winter here the A/C does work. The defrost setting with A/C seems to work slightly better than just the heat alone also. But they still fog up like crazy.

Yea, clean the windows really good. In winter, I mix rubbing alcohol with windex to get rid of streaks. If you still have fog probs, run the ac on max, but turn the temp to hot. This will dry the air inside the car and stop the fogging.

The heater core could be leaking. Are you losing coolant? this will put a film on the windows and they will fog up... or maybe it did have a leak and has been fixed and the windows just need to be cleaned

ha ha ha ha.... sex in a sunfire... I think that should be an olympic event!

Yea, the smoking thing... I only inhale through the filter, because everyone knows that second hand smoke is the bad stuff.

Get a black magic glass cloth (you can get them from wal-mart). Good for removeing film.

I thought heater core too. We did a leak test on the cooling system and everything was fine though so that is not the problem. I have also cleaned the windows very good a couple times now.

Is the carpet wet anywhere? Like under the floor mats, under the seat, etc. maybe you have a water leak *other than the heater core.

My wifes previous 95 civic did the same thing, fogged up during the cold ALL the time. The best thing was to crack a window on both sides and alloy it to help remove the moisture build up with the def on HI with HEAT.I kept this car SUPER clean all the time so regardless of how clean the glass is will help but ,not prevent fogging. Now I did install some vent visors to prevent rain from coming in which helped reduce the super cold air coming in with the windows down, but ultimately the civic was notorious for this issue.Keeping the glass clean helps alot and weekly at that like I did.OK Oh by the way walmart does sell some so called de fogger stuff which is suppose to prevent this, check around the wiper blades section thats where its at.

well, u can try using the solution people use on their hockey visors to keep them from fogging up....or try a combination of diluted shampoo cleaner...this helps keep them from fogging too.

Try to see if the heater core is blocked with dust/crud and is unable to pass the right amount of air.I cleaned my heater core when I first had my car and it was almost totally blocked with a felt like coating. A Shop Vac sucked it clean and there was a great difference in air flow

Hope this helps
