Just wondering which repair manual you all used when doing stuff to your engine.
Ive got a chilton's manual. Its basic but it gives you an idea of to where to start on a project.
i have both....haynes tends to have more on the electrical componetns whereas chilton has the break down of the whole car but covers only a bit less in details on the electricals. my 2 cents....
I have the Haynes manual and it has pretty good pictures and explanations.
I just bought a GM service manual for my 00 Cav and it is really good too. Very inclusive. If you go to the Helms.com website you will see that some of the manual sets are on sale for 1/2 off this month.
I paid the big bucks for the GM service manual. Then I bought the Haynes. Whenever I need to, I go to the Haynes first. The Haynes is a lot more "user friendly" and is aimed to help the backyard mechanic, not the GM service technician.
Factory Service Manual all the way!!!. Well not exactly true, I do break out the Chiltons even though the one I own only goes to 96 and the car I have is a 97. I find haynes is a dumbed down version of Chilton's which is a rip off of the FSM
i prefer haynes over the chilton book, but service manual has a lot more info and is more accurate generaly speaking then the other two. however the service manual often refers to equipment you have no access to. like tech2 scan tool, seems step 2 or 3 in all diagnostic charts is to hook up the scan tool. chilton & hayes are aimed more at do it yourself croud so often instead of telling you to use gm tool j-123456789 it will tell you to use plyers or something.
I've always used Haynes.
I had no problem rebuilding my LT1 in my 95 Camaro and I've had good success with my wifes 97 Dodge Avenger.
BUT, I was given 2 Haynes Manuals for my 89 Sunbird.
1-for 1982-1992
1-for 1982-1994
The one for 82-92 told me to put my timing at 10 BTDC
The one for 82-94 told me to put my timing at BTDC IF it was an 89 and newer.
The older book was correct, not the newer and I wasted a whole week trying to figure out why the car wouldn't stay running.
So needless to say, I was very pissed at the manual.
89 Sunbird GT Turbo (My new toy)
95 Camaro Z28 (My Baby)
97 Avenger (Wife's Baby)
Helm. Dealer should have information. Somewhat expensive.
Some of the Helm manuals are on 1/2 price sale through the end of December. Check out their website.
