Hey guys (and gals, hopefully), this is my first time posting on the j-body.org forums and I'd just like to introduce myself and give a shout to all the rice-eating GM faithful! I drive a red 2002 Pontiac Sunfire GT 2.2L Ecotec 5-speed Getrag with no mods.
The reason for my post is a bit of a silly one, but I just thought I'd ask around and see if anyone else has had a similar problem arise with their ecotec j-body. Recently while accelerating hard onto the freeway I felt a very noticable loss of power at the top of 3rd gear (approx. 5k-5.5k rpm). The engine light began to flash so I immediately let out of the throttle and gently pushed it into 4th and on to 5th. The engine light disappeared, and the ride home went smoothly after that. The next time I took the car out I made a point to see if the problem persisted, and sure enough when I launched from a stop the car seemed to bog at the top of every gear, and the engine light flashing returned. After a few days the engine light became stuck on permanently and is still annoying me!! I know very well that the easy answer to my problem is to take it into a garage and get it hooked up to a scantool, but I'd rather not pay my wonderful local GM dealer a $45 surcharge just to look at the damn thing. If anyone has any knowledge of this problem, please let me know! My sunfire has about 77,000 km and until know has been running extremely well. As far as I can tell there are absolutely no other problems with the way the car runs, except when I "give it". Anyway, thanks to the admins for putting together such a great forum, and I hope to get to know you all and your cars! Later all.

Flashing CEL is multiple cylinder missfire. Check your spark plugs?
yeah, flashing is misfire
now that it's on permanently... take it to autozone they have a free scan tool and will tell you what's wrong
or even take it to some local ma/pa mechanic and ask if they'd be able to see what the codes are
Sounds like a fuel issue. Do you have a fuel pressure reader?
