Heater control panel bulbs
Friday, November 11, 2005 3:36 PM
I made a post about this a long time ago, but cannot find the thread! Anyway, I finally got around to taking out the dash in my 95 today. The bulbs in the heater control panel seem to be burnt out. I used to be able to tap on the front of the panel & they'd intermittently work, but they're absolutely dead now.

So I have 2 questions, 1. what type of bulbs are these (number/model), and 2. how in the world do you get them out of their sockets!? I tried pulling the tip of the bulb, but they would NOT come out. Is the little fixture piece (plastic) part of the bulb too or what am I missing here? Please post if you can help, Thanks!

Well, like I said, I tried pulling them out of their holders.......they just wouldn't budge. I even *considered* grabbing the tips with needle nose pliers, but at the last minute decided against that "bright" idea

I remember that in the old thread someone gave the model of the bulb & I saw them in walmart. They weren't in holders/sockets though, the package only had the glass bulbs in it. There *must* be some trick to getting them out of their sockets.

Just replying to my post here... I found the old thread (had to search "archives"!)... anyway, someone said that the bulbs were #74 size. From looking on line prior to finding the old thread, I came to the conclusion that they were either 73 or 74.

The thing I *still* don't get though, is how you get those tiny bulbs out of the sockets!

If I get to it this weekend, I'll report back on what happened. I say "if" because I'm not sure if I'll get the time this weekend or not and it's not too big of a deal if I don't (it's only the heater controls )

They are 74's and yes you'll probably have to break them in order to get them out. They're not made to plug n' play like every other bulb in your car.

I replaced mine with blue leds #74 from:

Super Bright Leds.com

So that now my HVAC knobs light up blue at night. (Bear in mind that you'll have to peel off the rubber encasing in order for this to really work).

If you want more info, just search the interior forum for the keyword "HVAC bulb".

Use the needle nose pliers with a fat rubber band in the 'jaws' of them. It grips the bulb, and can be used to soften the pressure of the metal on the glass.

You'll still most likely break the bulbs though . They are a pain.

Good luck.

Thanks for the posts guys! I was at walmart today and didn't see any 74s, so it's gonna have to wait until this week sometime or (most likely) next sunday. I'll try the trick with the rubber band (or maybe wrap some electrical tape) around the pliers. But yeah, they'll prob. break anyway

I saw the LED replacements on ebay, but I don't feel like spending as much as they're asking (about 2.50 + 3 shipping from one guy -EACH). I think they were 2 or 3 dollars for 2 when I saw them a while ago in the store (thought it was WM, but maybe it wasn't...unless they just didn't have any this time). I WILL post back here after I replace them though to offer any further advice or even to just let you guys know what went wrong/right. Thanks again for the hlep!

It's the 2nd group of bulbs from the bottom of that webpage (Under the heading "Instrument Cluster and Gauge Backlights").

Don't confuse the T 1 1/2 bulbs (they have a twist-lock base) with the regular #74's.
Just the plain #74s will do.

FYI - If you do decide to pickup some T 1 1/2s thinking to replace your gauge backlighting (speedometer, tachometer, etc.) be advised that they are too small for that application! They will not replace the main bulbs in your gauge cluster.

However...

They are the perfect size to replace your blinker signals, daytime running indicator, and high beam indicator (don't bother with the high beam light, the overlay itself is colored blue and will not change to the intended color by swapping out the bulb).

I doubt that you'll find a #74 @ your local retailer. It's not the sort of bulb that's commonly sold off the shelf. You might be able to get them through your dealership but they won't have fancy colors like the aftermarket ones off Ebay or whatever.

Hope this helps!

Nope.

Just plain #74.

Now scroll to the very bottom of the page.
They're the 2nd group bulbs from the bottom.

"Instrument Cluster and Gauge Backlights
Twist-Lock type instrument LED bulbs consist of a T 1 1/2 (#73/74) miniature LED bulb installed in a twist-lock socket base. LEDs have a wide viewing angle.
Available with White Blue Green Red or Amber LED
Overall length: 21mm Extends into cluster: 14mm

#74 LED bulbs are also available without the holder "

In the picture, you'll see 2 rows of bulbs:

The bulbs in the top row are the T 1 1/2s (which are essentially #74s with a twist-lock base). The bulbs in the 2nd row (6 bulbs of varying color pictured side by side) are the number 74s

If you click the "Buy Now" button, you'll get this webpage:

Buy Now

Scroll down and you'll see the #74 bulb.
Black and white, no chance you'll order the wrong one.
