can hear ticking when i give it hard

when i give it the gas hard pedal to the floor I can hear some ticking in the engine bay... I think my timing chain needs to be replaced.. could this be whats ticking? or what... I have a 2.2 97 engine

Pinging? Knocking?

How many miles? Any mods? What grade of fuel are you using? When was the last time you changed your spark plugs? Auto or 5 speed? Does it only do it when you're going up hills? Or any time?

Yes if it does it at idle too just not as loud it could just be a lifter. Which isnt that bad.

might change my lifters this winter since i have all good ones from my old engine...... well the car doesnt do it at all when i drive normally its when i mash it around 4rpms

I agree with the spark knock diagnosis above. If I run poor fuel in my Cadillac, I get what sounds exactly like a rapid loud CLICKING sound from the engine. My '84 Cutlass used to have a metallic "ping" sound, but for some reason, the Northstar's spark knock sounds like a sharp tick. I bet yours is the same problem. Check for poor fuel, carbon buildup, proper EGR operation, etc.
