i was wondering if anyone knows which coolant temp sensor is most likely the one to cause idle troubles when cold, and where it is, i'm not sure but i think there is two of them. thanks for any help

1. Engine coolant temperature SENSOR has two wires, one YELLOW the output and a PURPLE connecting to BLACK ground, this feeds a signal to the ECM.

2. Coolant temperature SENDER with one Dark Green/White or Dark Green wire is a simple temperature variable resistance to directly operate the Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge(and nothing else)

#1 usually affects the running when the engine is warmed up and is out of closed loop-but I could be wrong.

These are for a 93-94 Cav so later wiring could be different

Mine is a 96' sunfire 2.4 automatic, i was told there was one by the thermostat, but i can't see one, there is one near where the thermostat usually is on a vehicle, (except mine is behind the motor), on top of the motor, by the power steering pump, but i'm kinda clued out right now, hope this helps

Few things here.

The ECT sensor is a rheostat, it means it measures temp. change.

To test you need a temp gun, and a voltmeter. You can look up spes for example, say at 180F the temp sensor should be putting out 2.5V, but it might be putting out 1V. So the computer would think it is colder and therefore add more fuel, because colder engines need more fuel because it doesnt adomize as well.

A main sympton it has failed is bad gas mileage by the way.

would 27mpg be considered bad gas mileage??? this is a 96' 2.4 we're talking about, i have gotten 34 before, not lately. if this ect is shot, would it affect my idle, to say jump around a bit when cold and then smoothen out later? thats what it is doing. how much would a ect cost me around(canadian)???? thanks again
