Replace Water pump OverHeating
Monday, November 14, 2005 5:01 AM
History, last tuesday I noticed a big leak from the water pump, and went to repair it Sunday. When taking off the water pump and noticed liquid coming from the weap hole.

So I replaced the water pump yesterday and tested it on the driveway and everything was fine. Went to work this morning and noticed that the check coolant light came on and went off. 2 or 3 minutes down the road, I see that my temp guage is rising above normal, turned around to go back home and it hit the red. Pulled over at the Kangaroo and parked it.

I did put a galon of 50//50 Prestone antifreeze in it, so I believe my problem is the lack of antifreeze. I just need reassurance that this is the problem or could it be my thermostat?

Thanks,
Josh

your suppost to use dexi-cool not regular antifreeze. now i know some people run the green stuff but i dont know if it does anything to the engine. you could possibly have a bad thermostat

i would add more antifreeze cause the stuff really wont circlute til you drive it. just add more it wont hurt.

Now you have me worried. If I get the Dex Cool today from the dealer, how bad is it going to mess up my engine and how much of it do I need..

Thanks,
Josh

About how much do I need of Dex Cool and how should I mix it? 50/50?

Thanks,
Josh

dex-cool is premixed and does not need mixing. i heard though once you switch you should really keep it consistant so i wouldnt change back. search around here, you'll find the big thread about dex-cool

Ok, new problem, the radiator fan never turned on. Does the thermostat control that or how can we check if the fan is good or not?

Thanks,
josh

Changed the thermostat, and fan kicked on for a second then cut off. Temp guage went up to 200 and there was no heat coming out of the vents. Any ideas? Also how do i purge the 2200 2002 Cavalier. I'm waiting for my manual to come in but it hasn't arrived.

Thanks,
Josh

I'm not sure about the 2200, but on my 2.2, there's a black round pipe that comes across the front of the engine with a valve in it, that's how you burp the system and get the air out.

Fan is electronically controlled, not by the thermostat. To see if you're fan works or not you can turn on the AC or defrost and see if it comes on, if it does then the fan motor and relay are fine. If it doesnt check the relay and fuse if there is one i forget. If those are fine and it never comes on you might have a bad coolent temp sensor. The fan comes on on my 2200 at almost 3/4 of the heat gauge (195 being 1/2) or after 5 minutes of idling/driving under 5mph. The thermostat just controls when the coolent starts to flow through the engine and not when the fan comes on, oem one opens at 180 degrees.
Dex-cool can be pre-mixed or not depends where you bought it, the bottle should tell you if you need to mix it or not. Adding Green coolent to dexcool makes it a discusting shade of brown and makes dexcool not any better then regular green antifreeze, so you loose youre long lasting property of dexcool and should change the coolent ever 30k miles, otherwise it doesnt matter.
There are a few bleeder valves on the 2200 i'm not sure where i never had to use them, i think there are 2 or 3 of them.

your really not supposed to mix the 2 from what i've read. you might want to drain the system completely and go with either dexcool or regular antifreeze.

Dex-cool ISN'T premixed unless the bottle states that it is. Same deal as the green stuff, read the side of the bottle for optimum mixing with distilled water.

we learned in auto today that if you mix the 2 together it could turn into a gel and really mess up hte inside of ur motor. I would take it to be flushed if you can and stick iwth one or the other.

Thanx Charles

i dont know how u figure its premixed ive bought it both at the dealership when i worked there the GM brand or another brand at parts tore.. both needed to be mixed.. different for each one just read the bottle

there's one that says "NO WATER NEEDED" that's the 50/50 mixed.

you can also get the one that is not mixed and water is needed.

about the car.
check for air pockets, make sure thermostat is opening, make sure cooling system is Full.
