Ok i have a 2001 Cavalier with close 60k miles on it, its a 2.4. I have noticed the black smoke before (somewhat) but today I reved the engine a bit in the parking lot to show off to a friend and he said that there was some black smoke/soot coming out. I'm concerned about this.... my Map sensor to intake manifold vacum hose is good and i have new ac delco platinum spark plugs. What could be causing this? I know black smoke is indicating that the car is using too much gas. I'm thinking 02 sensor...
Oh btw my fuel economy isn't that good... and i try to take it easy on the gas around town.
that's normal. If I rev mine up really hard and high I get black smoke too. Just not all the time.

Was the car warmed up or still cold when you did it. It will do it more when its cold because the O2 sensors arent warmed up yet and its working in open loop.

"qaz" is right....if you are reving it up right after start up when the engine is cold more black smoke that uaual will apear.
It has to do with the o2 sensor and the fact that the car is running ritch. Just let it warm up next time you show off.
yes the car was cold, I'm thinking of changing the O2 sensor anyways its probably working half decently anyways, I also notice some hestitation and the car doesn't feel right.
if your economy isnt great and your car isnt performing as well as it should, u can do one of two things
1: clean your O2 seonsors by hittin the endsof em with a small propane/butane torch, or other open CLEAN flam to clean soot and other deposites off
2: just replace it, but cleaning can save you some bucks
