ok, here's the story. I have a 95 2.2L engine. my car didn't have an engine in it a week ago. I was getting a new engine ready, but since the inspection expired, and my car kept getting towed for it, i decided to put the old engine back in, which when it last ran, had no problems. I got it finished in about 5 days, and was driving it around yesterday. it felt good, strong, took it to a muffler shop to weld my exhaust together. after that, i was driving straight to the inspection station. on the way, it started making a loud clanking sound. I had a friend listen today, and he confirmed my suspision, it's knocking. We think. loud hammer like sound. its infrequent. I get it during cranking to start the car, i get it when i drive, especially when i shift, and its in nuetral. everytime i press the clutch, i hear a rapid clanking sound. It was running a little rich, i have a wideband in the car. it would show 12.5-14.9 sometimes leaner. I pulled the plugs out, their black with carbon. So, it seems to be getting fuel. i just put new plugs in it, and the problem is still there after startup. I also limped the car to the gas station to put some 93 in it, cause the fuel had been sitting for over 6 months. it knocked on the 1 mile trip back from the gas station. That was an hour ago. So, maybe spark. The coil packs are stock, except i have the rk sport tack adapter, to get a signal, i was trying to figure out which wire to tap, and tapped a new one when i put the car back together. I'm gonna go pull those wires off to see if they are the problem. Could i be going the wrong way, is this possible a bearing? Oh, i also have good oil pressure, around 50-60 depending. Also, on the way back, i tried to gas it some, and it just didn't accelerate at all....
I checked the rocker rollers, theiy l seem to be tight, and correctly adjusted.
Please help. and sorry for the essay. i'm just trying to provide all the info.
I unhooked the wires from the rksport tach adapter, same problem.
I removed the injectors, setup the fuel rail so it would fire the injectors into the air, not into the manifold so i could look at the spray pattern. They all fired, and looked fine. I let them soak in some seafoam, just the nozzel. put them back in the intake manifold, put everything back together, and still have the same problem. So, its got to be something relaing to timing. or the control of air and fuel mixture amounts.... resulting in low fuel in the mixture, and it detonating early. ideas?
A lot of knocking if that flywheel is not tight on the
crankshaft.
?? could it be??
hmmm.... very good possibility. but that wouldn't explain why i don't have power when i floor it, and its stalling out at idle. i can't let it idle, or else it will stall. i have to keep my foot on the gas. i'm going to have to tear it down.... see whats up.
Suggestion : Look for a broken crankshaft....
Are you serious? i highly doubt i broke that huge piece of metal....but it may be a bearing... or something. down there.
Yes, I was serious...
A loose flywheel (if that was where the problem started)
can 'jerk' a crankshaft to the breaking point....
As to the poor running, a broken crankshaft will lose its
position relative to the camshaft....
Here's wishing you nothing but good luck !!
pull your dipstick and smell your oil, if it smells nesty, new bearings, if not, either it's not that bad yet, or it's not a bearing.

I see your point. i'll check that during tear down.
Also, thanks for the tip on the oil stick smell. I'll have to do that.
Ok I kinda scanned thru the post kinda quick like and wondered if you have thought about motor mounts. Re-Check your torque on the mounts and then look to see if you can see it separate when you run the RPM's up. If the knocking is constant at any RPM then yeah look inside the engine. There would be some other issues to consider if it were crank, camshaft, or flywheel issues.
For Crank, it is really doubtful that your car will run well at all. Camshaft, bad bad idle at the least. Flywheel major vibrations. If auto, prolly would shift awkwardly, manual, see if you could walk after your foot goes numb...or at least your clutch would slip. What about input shaft woes. Sure, but there again I would think you wouldn't necessarily get a knock.....
I think checking those motor mounts would be a good bet...and tranny mounts for that matter....
Does it pop when you take off under load? Could it be bad CV's? Bad inner CV's???
Hope that points somewhere...
Well, the motor mounts are all tight, and they are also all upgraded. polyurethane. The bolts are tight. I'll look again, but i think those are fine.
The car is manual, and i do get the sound constantly when I press in the clutch all the way, which would release the pressure plate from holding the flywheel down. and giving it room to move.

sell me your engine wire whip i need it for my 2.2 95 manual
bad crank sensor or bad timing chain could have jumped a tooth.
