Did this mess up my car at all?
Tuesday, November 08, 2005 6:52 PM
Well coming home tonight i put my car in neutral to coast down a long ass hill and at the bottum i asked my girl to put it in drive for me because i was to lazy to and she accidently put it into reverse. i quitly grab it and ripped it back into neutral but the car stalled out. so i stoped and went to restart it and it took awhile for it to restart but it did and everything seems alright i mean it shift like it did. Could this have messed anything else up??

Maybe nothing serious, i had an idiot friend shift mine in reverse while moving forward (dumbass friend, and i was on the phone or something of the sort), reverse still works fine in my Isuzu tranny though..

prolly not. my sis did that to her prizm, and still had it for two more years w/ no tranny probs, till she totaled it

how can you have that lazy of a moment while driving an automatic?

honestly... just seriously... think about what you said. who gives a crap? that absolutely serves no point at all. just seriously just ponder over the purpose of that post.

Anyways, I do the same thing too, just because. It can help save a little tiny bit of gas i guess. Anyways, you probably didn't mess anything up.

I don't know about you guys but honestly, why shift an automatic? I understand what you meant, Mike, by saving gas..but you're putting undue strain on the tranny and wearing it down. Anyone else agree?

Blown.

Mine has a lock so that I can't do that.

Anyway, it probably made the engine spin backwards a few revs which is why it was hard to restart. I wouldn't think it would break anything although it would be kinds a shock to be running 600 rpms idling and then quickly reved up to 1 or 2 k revs backwards.

the newer autos should be electronically controlled, so maybe it sensed that and cut your ignition. you should be a o k .

You seriously think that when in reverse, the engine revs the oposite direction?! Christ...

Don't reproduce...

Yes, when the car is moving forward and the transmission is in reverse, the engine will counter rotate. This is for sure with manual transmissions. Very probable with automatics if the fluid pressure is high enough.

I'll avoid making any smart assed remarks about you.

More like he was getting road head, she moved over and accidentally put the car in reverse as he drove....now no one is that lazy to not put it back in drive lol

^^haha, should have a lock out that protects the car. she had to push the button in and everything to shift up into reverse...she didn't...i can't...has she ever driven a car? drive is down, park/reverse is up...c'mon!!

GO PATS!!!

Spin backward????? No way. Manual or automatic it can't, well not from shifting into reverse anyway. You have whats called a reverse idler gear in both auto's and manuals that engages and allows the car to reverse while the engines rotation
maintians the same direction. A automatic can not do it at all as the torque converter
is in seperate parts that do not touch but it uses vains faceing opposite directions and as the engines revs come up it moves the fluid inside it and transfers that motion to the input shaft. The only was a manual car could do it is if it were in a forward gear clutch dis-engaged and the car pushed backward. All you did was stall the car you shouldn't have hurt anything but maybe this should help you to stop being lazy and shift things yourself.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

I user to have a plymouth acclaim and i did the same thing going down hills i accidently shifted it too far back and it went into reverse and the car died. Rolled to a stop and it started right back up so if everything feels good then you prolly didnt do any major damage lol

wow, engine turns backwards? WTF hahahaha

as long as you didn't put it in park while you were moving you should be fine, if you wanna jack up a trans, put it in park going about 40mph

ps - it is not a smart idea to put it in N going downhill. the engine helps slow the car down, and if you're just relying on the brakes, its NOT a good idea as you're gonna heat up and wear out the brakes real quick. the stock brakes suck to begin with.

umm... no

the engine only spins in one direction, all the time, unless it's off and doesn't spin at all.

You shouldn't have a problem. I've done it in an automatic, my mom has, my brother has and some other people I know.

Typically it will just turn off the engine, and say NO reverse for you!! Then put you into nuetral.

Well...of course it will "spin" backwards...not "run" backwards.

Take a manual transmission for example.

If you coast down a hill like the original thread said...and some how get the transmission in reverse...engage the clutch...the engine will spin backwards.

Likewise, you can push start a car by putting it in reverse and coasting backwards and releasing the clutch with the ignition on.

I have done both.
