BURNT OUT MOTOR

well as i was driving home from school i heard a loud knocking sound from the engine i stopped to check my oil and i had none. It was bone dry, seconds from smoking or something of that sort. so i made my way in the local autozone and bought some oil which didnt fix the problem. so when i drove it back home every time i hit 20-30mph its started knocking bad and the sound did come from within the engine. so i'm thinking to just f**ked up my engine, now much is it gonna cost me fix the problem? my dad made some calls to his friend which told him he could fix it the problem for $700, in which he'll buy a motor for the car and put it in cuz it would cost the same if not more to open it up and fix it by replacing the parts. what's a poor college student to do? is this a good deal or should i just replace the parts, what do i do?
