Well I did my searching in hopes of finding an answer quick, but I didn't. So now I have to hang it up for the night.
Here's what hapned. Of course, an easy job like an alternator change has to go wrong, just like it always seems to go on my car these days. I eyeballed the intake mani for a while, then decided to take it out, then looked again, and decided to see if i could get the alternator out with out the mani out, and I did, but when i was going to take the bold out of the back of the alternator, the wire that goes to the starter snapped at the bolt head. I looked at the red wire and was gonna rewire it up to a new round fitting to go on the bolt, but the wire looks like a bundle of 6 or 7 in one red casing. Is this right, or is it just one wire?
Question 2 is this. I bought a new alternator, but the place where the bolt goes in at looks different than my 96 alternator does. It still has the bolt, but it has a leed comeing off of it that goes down to a threaded bolt. Is this something they put on the newer j-bodies? I figured it is, cause maybe more than just me have had the same isuse with snapping that wire off. Anyway, if it is, can i still make it work for my 96?
Thanks guys and gals.
absolutely no idea what your trying to say... take some pics if you can
Ugh, I would but of course it's at my friends house about 30 miles away. Sorry man, I know it's tough to go off of what i typed.
The first issue was with the wire that I assume powers the starter. It had a loop on the end to go over the bolt. I followed the wire back to the starter, so I assume it gives it juice. Anyway, that loop snapped off due to age, as it did it on the first twist of the bolt.
The second issue was with my new alternator. Instead of just a bolt, it is the bolt with a lead coming off of it. This lead goes down to an exposed threaded bolt. I'm not sure if this is something they changed on the newer alternaors or what, or maybe if it is so it a way of testing the alternator with it still on the car. The exposed bolt (with the alternator installed) would hang of fthe the front bottom, there by making it accesable from the engine bay.
I'll send a drawing (it won't be good, but desperate times call for desperate measures).
Well I called the dealership, they said it was a power cable to the starter, grand total (drum roll please)....................................$74.93 for a freak'n 14" cable if not shorter. I'm not sure on how to recrimp power cables, but God knows i'm gonna learn quick. I'm gona take my goofy designed alternator in and have them look at it.
Well if anyone cares or runs into this issue in the future here is the outcome. I put a new clamp on the starter wire for one. For two that goofy alternator i had, well i took it into the boys at Advance Auto. They got out a 2.4 alternator for the cav and it looked like my old one, then we tried compare'n it to the Malibu one and there it was. The place i got my alternator from gave a malibu one.
Well it's all put in now. Run'n fine so far, had the system all the way up, with AC and no cut'n out on the speakers, so something is fixed. Although, I"m get'n a weird smell off the alternator area. Just wondering if thats normal, maybe like the new alternator smell..
i was about to say, my replacement alternator was IDENTICAL to the stock one (that had the bearings go bad).
as for new alternator smell (lol) not sure on that one buddy.

well the good news is the smell went away, the bad new is it's still idling way too low. It's dip'n the 550 600ish range and it wants to cut out. I ran a diagnostic on it and got a "intake air temp High input"
is your IAT sensor plugged in in your intake? if it is, might be time for a new one.
