I'm having transmission problem as you can tell from the title of this. Every now and again it seems my tranny will get stuck in gear while accelerating at low speeds and I have to mash the accelerator until it goes forward. I took it to Cottman's Transmission they want to do an overhaul but I think they're trying to get over for something that might be simple. BTW, this is for a 88 Ford Taurus. My 98 Cavalier pretty much had the same problem but the bolts in the pan was loose and just needed to be tighten and a fluid change. There's no leaks whatsoever. Does this sound like something simple or were they right to diagnose an overhaul?
a few more symptoms might be helpful.
GO PATS!!!
Lets say I'm at a stop light...once I hit the gas it'll drive fine until I reach 15-25 mph and the tranny gets stuck/stalls for a period of time as if I'm free revving, after I mashed the gas for say 20 seconds it'll go in gear and drive normal. I've experienced this MORE when the car is at normal temperature if that helps
sounds like the tranny is slipping...when was the last time you changed fluids?
GO PATS!!!
just bought it. its an 88 taurs w/80k miles
might be as simple as needing a good fluid change. might need to be rebuilt.
wait and see if someone in here knows more before you waste a bunch of money.
GO PATS!!!
It also might just be low on fluid. Check it and tell us what you find.
the color is dark brown looking. After driving and getting out of the car there would be like a slight burnt smell
Just change it then. It won't hurt anything and probably will help.
new fluid to proper level, tarus trannies are picky bout fluid quality and level, ill run this by our tranny guy and get back to u if u need
