anyone no how to disassemble an a/c compressor?
Friday, October 28, 2005 12:40 PM
I got a '99 cavalier that either needs a new a/c clutch or bearings. I got to it and took off the nut in the center. After that I noticed it wouldn't come off,I looked at it and realized there was a clip thats impossible or highly unlikely to get off. Anyone out there no anything at all about how to do anything like this? I know bearings are fairly cheap, and clutches are reasonably priced. But to buy a new compressor or have a shop do it is outragious! Any knowledge would be greatly apprieciated, like a exploded diagram or advice. Thanks.

I dont know anything about disassembly of a compressor--

However, I have the A/C compressor I removed from my 97 2.4-- I took it out because I never used it.. It works well.

If you're interested- email me.

you need a puller to remove the clutch. Then remove the snapring that holds on the front hub bearing. If the compressor is just making a grinding noise when the ac is off, all you need to do is pull the clutch a little bit away from the hub.

Hey Jimmy, my '99 is making the grinding noise when the AC is off but I thought the clutch itself was bad. So you are saying that it could make the whining noise when the clutch is simply too close to the engine? Just making sure I get it.

sounds like the pulley bearing is bad. lots of special tools required its easier to replace compressor
