EGR or MAP senor?

Like the two above, how can you tell which one is going? I've had a tough time between
the them, as I have been told one or the other. At the moment, I only have the money for
one, so I have to make this choice count.

If it idles bad, and I can turn the engine on and off by speeding up or slowing down,
which one would be your best guess?

It has the other bad signs, like SUV gas milage, loss of power, etc...

My guess would be the MAP, common problem on the 3.1s....but....

Ok did you even bother to check for CODES!!!!! Now if u have a code 33 or 34 which is the MAF mass air flow sensor. If u have a code 44 or 45 u need to replace the o2 sensor low voltage at this one.Code 45 is pretty much the same O2 sensor. Now being u have a automatic it also could be ur TCC torque convertor clutch switch is DEAD and sticking which inadvertainly affects the cars idle and runability. To see if the EGR is bad disconnect the vac line assuming it has one ,if the problem goes away problem solved.Next the Tcc switch is mounted on the transmission and all u have to do is disconn it and yet again,if improved changed the switch and fluid and filter. If u have a access to multimeter u can check ur map sensor for voltage in volts in 3-5 volts range using a vac pump .The voltage should go up or down based on vacumm ,if the vacumm does not change the voltage u have a bad map sensor. Its really hard not to write a book on explaining this .But hopefully u can use this as a start.Just post ur finds after checking these items.I do not know the exact loc of the tcc on 3.1 auto's but look for a electr plug not the speedo sensor ,u should b able to find it .

By the way just pulling the egr off and cleaning the carbon out and making sure the rubber diaphram inside is good and if it has a metal pintal make sure it moves up and down FREELY.Use carb cleaner and a wire brush to clean it out.It does wonders on the exhaust gas recirculation system.IF the egr is shot u need a new one.Just do a visuall check after removal and clean as stated above.

Wow, ron, that is quite a bit there.....

As far as codes, it has come up MAP, once popped up something else...

TCC-already replaced.

o2-already replaced.

Have not tested mappr cleaned the egr...so that would be next...

Thanks for the ideas...the more I can get, the more I can try..

New News...Idle much better (still a little rough), more power....but not back to mormal..

I'm about 70% there, besides the egr, any other suggestions?

It would not hurt do a replacement of fresh plugs and wires if u have not done so already. Also a new fuel filter and do a psi check on ur injectors one may be going bad.Run a can of seafoam in ur fuel it will help clear out the trash in the fuel and combustion chambers to remove the carbon buildup. If u have a weak injector this may be a problem.Just do the psi check at each injector to ensure they are working at the spec they are suppose too. That's what comes to mind right now,so let me know what u find and we can try and remedy the issue for good.IT's probably just worn parts or something really stupid causing this but, with out physically being there to see and work on it ,its all just eliminating possibilities.Cool huh.

Not trying to threadjack, but where is the egr on a 2.2 96 sunfire?

Girls suck, buy a fast car.

Yep, very cool.

I put plugs and wires on about a year ago...replace em' , or wait?

Yep, reaplaced the fuel filter....but I'm going to replace this one soon anyways...

Seafoam? I wonder if that would be safe, considering this cav might have about
a 130k miles worth of carbon buildup.... Would that hurt my new map sensor?
I wonder if it would be better if I ran it direct, or if I should put it in the tank....

Seafoam is 100% safe to use on cars etc with all the emission stuff.U can direct inject it just use the directions on the can.I am not sure which vac line or tube u run it thru but, seafoam is the BEST stuff on earth for cleaning out crap in ur engine.Ur plugs may be shot just depends if with the running condition it could have fouled a plug or two,its completely possible. The wires not being to old I would let it ride.Ok

Hmmm..after a few days of driving..it still idles rough (though not as bad)...but the MPGs
are much, much better...(like 9-10 to mid 20s so far)

Also replaced a wire...just in case...

No check engine light..at all. I've tried driving it around to see if it would come on...

A friend looked at it...he thinks I may have to replace a couple more fuel related
parts (EGR, maybe TB sensor) to get it up to good running shape, mostly because
of the milage..(it's at 132k now) and nothing has been replaced so far (that wasn't
RM)...

I'm going to give Seafoam a try...and pick up a can...if that doesn't work, My guess is
going to be the egr...
