How hard is it to replace the fuel filter? The mechanic said he had to remove the gas tank in order to replace it and charged me a lot!!! It's weird becuase the dealer had changed it like in five minutes. I'm just wondering

That mechanic is an idiot you can quote me if you like. The filter is OUTSIDE the tank
just in front of the drivers side rear tire I believe theres one clip and one threade side.
And its easy to do. DO NOT GO BACK TO THAT MECHANIC AS HES CLUELESS.

Ok let me revise that cause there are some smart asses aroung here. TECHNICLY
your car has 2 fuel filters the one I stated above and yes there is one in the tank but I've never heard of anyone needing to replace it unless your replaceing the fuel pump too.

before you pull the filter off, make sure you empty the fuel lines of gas. otherwise you'll have a mess. pull the fuse for the fuel pump and then start the car. let it run til it dies. when you take the filter off you'll probably still have a little gas in the line, but not nearly as much.

Well, it's been replaced but he said he had to remove the gas tank because he coulnt get his hand in there and was afraid of breaking a fuel line. So the gas tank doesn't need to be removed at all? that must of been his trick to rip me off! damn fool charged me 58 bucks for labor!! but then again it wasn't changed for 2.5 years and said it felt heavy and wasnt easy to come off just like that because it was so old. thanks
you got ripped...coulda done it yourself in 20 mins for the cost of the filter. how much did you pay in total?

Damn you got jacked!! I have a 98 Cavi and on one side of mine all you had to do was loosen it and the other side you just had to pull back a little clasp. Took me a whole 5 minutes to do.

Not without the tool, and the coupler thing was probably corroded to @!#$ anyways like they do if you don't change the filter every few months.

yeah I haven't changed it since I got it . it had 85000 miles now it has 14800. so maybe thats why it was hard to get to or take off. I mean he only charged me like 115 to do the trans fluid and filter. i thought that was cheap. but yeah
I just did this on my 2000, 2200. while yes its a little ackward to get to, its way not worth getting the tank off. I did it in like 30 minutes from under the car on one jackstand and two crecent wrenches, if he couldnt do it on the lift with open end wrenchs he's not very good.

did mine with one wrench, on the ground lol, in like 2 min, w/pressure in lines lol
ill admit it, i wasnt rushing and that time is pretty slow, im sure i can do it much faster now.
and yeah i 'thought' i got the pressure out but it doesnt start so..... my point is should not be hard for a mechanic with a lift and wrenchs and all.
