Speed Sensor question
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 3:30 PM
Ok, so the dealer says my speed sensor is shot and that I need a new one. I've got a 2004 Cavalier LS SPORT Coupe. The problem I'm having is that when I start to drive and usually only when I start driving the for the 1st time, I get the trac off, check engine and ABS lights come on.

So my question is...will a speed sensor from any other year work on my car? I've been to Auto Zone, Pepboys and Action Auto and they all don't have the part. They all say that it's not available and I have to get it from the dealer. And the dealer wants like 400 for the part.

Any help would be great..thanks
Matt

a 2004??? it should still be covered under warranty. unless you've accumulated a MASSIVE amount of miles in a year.

GO PATS!!!

But isn't the powertrain warranty 100,00km's or 60,000 miles..if you have 54k your still under warranty. This is all just a hunch I'm going on, but all all auto trans fitted to the eco should be the same (at least on same chassis). If you want to be certain, call up the dealer and ask what the part #/$ is for different years. The eco came out here in 2002 i believe. The Z24 had the option to take the 2.4L or eco depending on build date(I remember this cause i was gonna buy a new one with the eco..ne-waz)
I doubt a tech at the dealer could even really tell you this answer unless he's changed one..i mean it's not something that fails every day. Your best bet would be to post a pic of yours so ppl can see and match against theres(hehe.. talking vss here)..or go to the junkers and match/compare

those parts cant be found at any local auto store. is your speedo not reading and sometimes just dropping to zero? if not, then its probably not your vss. the vss is an expensive sensor that you have to get through gm (about 110 bucks). if it is your vss when its taken out, take a look at it and see if its covered in metal pieces at the end. if so, start saving for that new tranny

nope..... if you are over 56K miles it's not under warranty anymore...i had the SAME EXACT problem on my 03 cavalier with 29.890 miles on it....AND it's the service light on NOT the check engine ....it should be ABS/Trac/Service lights on.....it's probably one of the 4 ABS speed sensors gone bad...I actually had 2 bad sensors....so they replaced for free...the service advisor even told me I saved over $650 cuz of the warranty.....the sensor itself cost around $140 (front) and over $210 (rear)
