ok...i think i figured it out....hub bearing is terribly bad in my 98 sunfire GT. i figure its the passenger side cause when i turn left it gets worse and when i make a right turn it makes no noise at all. Well i know i can get a hub bearing but do i need the hub assembly too? what is the hub assembly...and do i need it to fix my problem?
- i went to oreilleys and the hub bearing was 49.99
- i went to napa and it was like 67.99 or something like that but he said that includes the hub assembly also. im not sure if oreilleys includes the assembly or not...
hub bearing and hub assembly?
or just the hub bearing?
and what is the bearing and assembly?
someone let me know please...cause the noise is driving me crazy....gotta get it fixed soon.
thanks a lot
get the hub& bearing assy, it will cost you machine shop time to press your old one out and new one in...I just got one from autozone for under 60$ and just put-er in.
skipped new seal as I didnt want to get new alignment and/or a new balljoint after beating it loose to replace a 2$ seal
They come as a whole assembly, hub and bearing. There is no pressing involved with these front wheel bearings.Just take the wheel off, remove the axle nut, remove the brake caliper, and remove the 3 T-55 torx bolts that hold the bearing on.Then get a screwdriver and pry the bearing off and slap the new one on.Its a 15 minute job.I forget what size the caliper and axle nut are.The only reason i know what size the bearing bolts is because i had to stop what i was doing and run to sears to get a torx 55 bit.The biggest size i had was a T-50.If you have any questions let me know.

do i have to get my front end re-aligned or anything...like ron said? or replace balljoint? or is all i need to fix my problem a hub and bearing assembly and put it in?
Don't have to get it realigned.
God bless America.
You need to get the hub assembly, and if you know what you are doing you can do it easily yourself, i did the front passenger mine myself, and the back passenger, its a really easy job, so good luck
I'm sorry to highjack the thread a bit, but I may be having the same problem in my 01 Cav...
Adam, can you please tell me:
Does the sound occur only when the car is moving and sound like a "wub wub wub" (thud like sound)?
Does the sound occur/repeat faster the faster you go?
Does the sound muffle or disappear when the brakes are applied?
Thanks for the help and good luck
Moe-- jack up the front of your car and try to move the wheel towards and away from your engine bay. If you have any movement you have a bad bearing. Sound usually occurs when you are going through a corner or you hear the "wub wub" while braking (though some tires make the "wub wub" sound while slowing down too).
yes moe...those are the same sounds mine is making. annoying isnt it?
lol yes Adam it can get quite annoying :p
Zach thanks for the tip, I will try that later on today, hopefully both Adam and I can get our troubles to go away.
Can anyone give me a link to an online store that sells the hub bearing/assembly for the 01 Cav (and for Adam the 98 Sunfire
)
To do the hub, you need a big socket, I forget the size, but it was big. Other than getting that, it was pretty easy.
Good time to do brakes as well if you almost need new ones.
Also, to check the wheel bearing, jack the car up and pull the wheel with your arms, picture how the bearing is holding your wheel in place and if you can move the wheel where the bearing should be restricting the movement you know you need a new bearing.

They all use the same hub. I have found that the dynapack ones from Discount seem to hold up well. I was replacing the Timken bearings I got from Autozone every 2 months untill they decided that they weren't going to honor my warranty any more
