Engine light on
Friday, October 28, 2005 3:52 PM
My engine light has been on for about a month now, and recently i've noticed the engine surging with steady acceleration. I was just wondering if it's one of the sensors or something more serious.

P;S to my previous post, i was wondering if there was any way to get the DTC without getting a diagnostic scan. I know on other makes of cars there is a way to retrieve codes using the key in the ignition a set number of times to bring the code up in the odometer screen.

wtf kind of car is it. Maybe whe can help you if you give us the vital information we need to do so. And driving around with the cel on for a month. come on.

Or just go to a store that checks codes for free. like autozone.

2001 you have to access the obd-II port. You need a scanner. You can buy a cheap one. like an actron (?) one for around $100 usd. Or find a shop that will hook it up real quick. It takes one minute to access obd-II codes.

Yeah, you'll need a scan tool of some kind. '96+ model years have the OBDII system that doesn't do the dashboard code retrieval. Where are you located (roughly)? Some of us already have such a tool and don't mind helping out. I have a policy that if anything's found, my fee is a sub & a soda for the session. A common code thrown is from the gas cap not being on right to keep fuel vapors under control (allegedly). Also, sometimes a benign problem throws a code, then corrects itself, leaving the light still on until scanned and cleared. IF this is the case, then disconnecting the battery for ~15 minutes will wipe the PCM of all codes. Anything serious enough and not self correcting, like say, a fritzed sensor, will make the CEL (check engine light) come back on. For the most part, the CEL comes on when a pollution control is awry.
