Hey guys,
I found my leaking coolant problem on my '95 Z24 . It is the water pump. According to Haynes, it looks like a bitch to do.
Can someone tell me what is involved in changing it, what else should I replace in the process, and does anyone have a section from a repair manual that they can email me? I have the Haynes as a back up, but it don't describe repair procedures well, and I really don't trust the manual much...
Thanks,

Just watched a buddy of mine do it at his Dad's garage and lemme tell you there was LOTS of cursing going on...
These are a tad of nightmare to do (thus why GM charges so much for the procedure).

took me about 10 hours STRAIGHT to do it.... i replace the thermostat and timing chain while i was in there. YES there is definitly alot of violent words in the process... also i recommend removing the header to do it.... it'll make life alot easier in the long run. and whatever you do.... dont mess up your timing!!!!!

water pumps on a 2.4 are terrible. its a long time worth of work.
So I went ahead and did the water pump. All I have to say is someone was really, really disturbed and pi$$ed off when they designed this engine. I think they put the water pump in the engine compartment first, then built the rest of the engine around it!
Anyways, it took me about 14 hours to do (with two bolts twisting off in the harmonic balancer, one bolt in the exhaust manifold...which I didn't get out). They say you have to take the timing chain off to get the pump out....well YOU DON'T!!! Not on the '95's anyways. What a bloody waste of time! All you really need to do is remove the exhaust manifold from the engine, disconnect any coolant hoses, any sensors, remove the thermostat tube and thermostat, and the water pump housing, then the water pump. Scrape off all old gaskets, then put on new gaskets and all the other parts.
The only mechanical problem I had was when I removed the timing chain tensioner, I forgot to put 8mm bolts through the cam sprockets to keep them in place. They both rolled slightly, because of the tension from the valve train. It was easy to set it all back up, just set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the marks, and aligning the camshaft marks and putting the 8mm bolts in to lock them in place.
Everything went back together OK, except when I started the car to run the Dex crap through, I noticed there was some sort of "rattling" coming from inside the top of the engine? I didn't have the valve cover off, and it almost sounds like I left something in the engine and it was bouncing around inside! I have no problems with performance, and it seems to run fine. Has anyone had this happen to them before?

took me like 45 mins to do mine. take the passenger side tire off. remove the fender lining. loosen the tensoner pulley and then take the 3 bolts out for the pump. its much easier than the 2.4's
The manual says if you do not remove the tensioner the water pump shaft can bind when removing the pump. That ais why the cam chain sover has to come off, to get to the tensioner.
In th 95 Chevy cavaliers they did not use the 2.4L Quad...They used the 2.3 Quad......If you remove the exhaust manifold and the pump housing you can remove the pump without taking the timing cover off....the water pump on a 2.3L quad is Splined not Geared.......Alldata says 6.5hrs for the 2.3L and 7.5hrs for the 2.4L....once you get a few of the under your belts and have all the rights tools you can knock them out in about 5-6 hrs. Its not a bad jov to do...it just time consuming......Patients......Thats All
