For some reason on my 2.4 the water pump is leaking by the block after the section meets the section that has the gear inside the timing chain.(second section from timing cover) Its not leaking from a gasket mating surface or anything. It has to be cracked is the only thing i can think of. So....my question is can the water pump be taking apart at the first gasket out of the timing cover. And just replace the housing? I am 3 hours away from my spare motor and parts so its hard to experiment.
"Spent way too much to give up now!!!"
its not cracked, its the weep hole.
my 2.4l water pump lifespan reached at 65k ,before it died i always have a coolant water loss. it burnt my headgasket and overhauled the engine. So better to send it for check.
My water pump died at 55k
Thank God I still had warranty, but alas it will probably die again at 100k. These were not well designed.

you can use JB Weld in it till you get a new one

please do not do that. the hole is there for a reason. its to let you know the pump is going bad. why ignore the problem? i got my pump at pep boys for 35 bucks
yeah for 35 dollars, but replacing that pump on the 2.4 is a pain in the rear as to what I've heard. You'll have to work with the timing belt or chain and may require timing after that. But since you are changing the water pump, might as well do the timing belt or chain while you're at it. The 2200 sfi water pump is a piece of cake as it's ouside of the engine in the accessories belt so it'll only take 30 mins to replace.
Water pump on 2.4L = Nightmare!

yea but why try to plug the hole thats SUPPOST to be there? doing this will only ignore the problem and more than likely warp your head then you'll be even more screwed.

you can tell by coolant dripping out. there is a weep hole on the pump and when the pump starts to go, coolant will drip from the weep hole. you'll notice a nice little puddle on the ground if your weep hole is leaking
I have 105,000 miles on my water pump. No problem yet, knock on wood.
