CEL Code question...
Tuesday, October 18, 2005 2:46 PM
Hey guys and gals:

First off, were y'all aware that dealerships want $70-$80 for an OBD-II diagnostic scan, but Advance Auto will do it for free!!?? How f*&#ed up is that!? ANNNYways...my girl's '03 Fire is throwing CEL code "P0442" with the description, "EAP Emission Control System Leak (Small)." What the hell is that, some sorta vacuum leak? Plan on fixin' this for her myself being that we didn't purchase a warranty for her second-hand Fire...any help and advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Peace,

That's what the guys at Advance said. When daylight arrives, I'll check the gas cap's sealing ability, etc. 'Course that sounds like WAY to easy of a fix for a CEL code.
Mfk-223 do you have any other ideas if the gas cap is fine? Thx dude.

A crack vacuum line maybe close to the canister. Selenoid not working properly.

check the gas cap first. It's what dealer see the most.

Ok guys, checked the gas cap, it's fine. Can't I disconnect the battery in order to reset the computer (erase the code)? I mean, in order to verify if it will duplicate the code trigger. Also, where exactly is the cannister located so that I can check lines?? Thx peeps, hope I can figure this out.

yes, but it WILL come back, a small evap leak isn;t just caused by a bad loose cap, but also a bad cap. replace your gas cap. if not that. you will have an Evap leak somewhere, if it's not the cap, u may need to take it somewhere to get the evap system smoked (i work at a ford/chrysker new car dealership, and most of our "Small" EVAP leaks are gas caps

Sunfirepower:

Aight, will go pick up a new gas cap for sure. As far as a system smoke, what are the going rates on such a service?

not too sure, ill talk to my boss and get a base price as to how much a dealership charges. not sure how many small shops smoke evap systems, equipment for it isn't exactly cheap, only shops i c having it are shops that do full emissions inspections. but im not sure what states and where require such inspections other than PA...
