Cooling Fan Problem
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 11:32 PM
I have a 96 Sunfire with a 2.2L. I think that my cooling fan may be malfunctioning. When I turn on my AC the fan does not come on. Changed the fan relay, took the fan motor out and ran 12 volts to the motor, the motor comes on. My main concern is that the temperature guage on my car goes just below the yellow mark when idling, is the cooling fan supposed to come on before then? Should I be concerned if my cooling fan does not come on when I turn on the AC??

well, How long has it been since youre thermostat and coolant been replaced?
Well if those are new, Then I would look at youre temperature sending unit on youre car, Usually if thats the problem.

Good Luck

The waterpump and thermostat has been changed. Applied voltage to the fan and she fired right up, also purchased a fan relay. Does anyone have a diagram of the connector where the fan goes on the relay center under the hood??

There should be a temperature switch mounted which tells the car the proper coolant temperature and then turns the fan on.

There should also be some fusible links that connect to the fan, check to see if any of those are burned out.

My guess is that it's that switch, maybe it might also be dependent on the A/C being turned on too.

the fan shoudl come on at a certain temperature, to simulate driving wind cooling the radiator off. youre car should NOT idle at the yellow, just itching to overheat into the red.

In my book, yellow is overheating too. I like "green" area, lol. Thermostats are cheap as compared to gettignhead gaskets installed, lol. Ditto for coolant temp switches and fan relays.

Does anyone know if it is possible to manipulate the temp the fan kicks on. GM fans kick on at like 215 deg. Is it possible to lower the temp it comes on relatively cheap?

My 97 has cooling problems too, but mine kicks the cooling fan on and off at odd times. When the ac is on, the fan runs like it should. When the ac is off, the fan comes on at really low temps (usually right after starting the car first thing in the morning).

Yea, my Dad was right... if it has boobs or wheels, eventually it's going to cause problems....
