Does anyone get a smell of gas when they walk around their car, It doesn't smell around where you fill the tank up, for me it if on the other side, any help would be great cause I don't wanna spend alot of money for a mech to tell me it is a 2 dollars part and pay 50 bucks for his 2 cents worth
Thanks
a fuel smell out of the exhaust (mines on opposite side of filler) would be too much fuel in the mix.
can you smell it under the hood?
that would be a leak in the carb/throttle body area, or the evaporative canister.
i suppose it could also be a fuel line, OR a fuel RETURN line, or even a vent from the tank (if its a vent, a slight fuel smell would be normal, as otherwise when the fuel tank heated up, it might burst if it couldnt vent...)
Is an '82 Olds Firenza a "Flash Ride" ?
Is it all the time? or just when you start the car?
It is all the time.. I can't smell it under the hood.
My gas tank is on the right side, while I can smell the gas on the drivers side.
I can however smell it in the car, not when I start it up but when I get in the car. For example, this morning when I got into the car I could smell gas(inside the car and on the driver's side), and once I went for lunch and got in the car I could smell it inside and outside again.
Any suggestions besides lighting a match to find out where the smell is coming from, haha
Check your fuel filter. Maybe one of the connections is leaking.
I smell fuel somtimes as well...

look under your car and see if you can see gas stains on the tank, i had to replace mine last winter, dirt/salt gets on the top part of the tank and starts eating the metal, so you dont normally have a leak(not enough that you'd notice your mileage) but the fumes escape and you smell it
What is the price of repairing or getting a new tank?
about 2 hours labour and i paid 160 cdn for the tank
The fuel tanks are made of HDPE so the will not rust as they are a type of plastic.
I have the same problem! I am gonna try and check it out tomorrow. I hope as hell it isnt the tank...anyone know what it is? Cuz I dont see any gas dripping from the tank, at least what I can see, and it is killing my gas mileage. I have gone through a half a tank of gass and have probably drove like 60 miles tops.
ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS PROBLEM IS?

Older 3rd Gens had metal tanks, the newer (00+?) had plastic ones..

only after 2000, my 99 had a steel tank and was replaced with a steel tank, heres a pic
If it were the gas tank leaking, wouldnt it loose pressure and cause the check engine light to come on?
correct me if im wrong but i don't see it being the tank, i bet it's a line.
I put it on a ramp, and found where there was gas, it is hard to say exactly what it is.. the corner of the gas tank is there as well as lines. I think it is either a line as you say or maybe just a bit leaking for the vent in the tank, cause I park the car on a slope.
SO its one of the lines coming out of the tanks? I think I know what your talkng about....
Yeah, I park my car on a slope too, so that might be why I am losing gas rapidly. Anyone know how to diagnose this...I really dont feel like dropping the tank.
The gas smell justin case you guys get it was the gas cap on the tank.. The check engine light came on so I got it checked out. The engine light came on b/c of not pressuring the tank. 30 bucks for part plus labour
My fuel line leaked for a very long time and I always wondered what the slight wiff of gas smell was. I figured it couldn't be anything serious since there wasn't any fire or any visible leaks, plus the smell was very minor...took the car for safety, and blammo, gas line leak.
i have the same problem, my fuel tank on the back of it is is rusted is its leaking if i park on a hill (sucks my driveway is a hill) so i cant put more then a half a tank of gas or it leaks. but u can smell the gas big time, i'll see how much they from my mechanic other wise ebay for me
