Squeaking Noise at Low Speeds...
Saturday, October 01, 2005 1:01 AM
I just noticed today that my car has started to "squeak" (for a lack of a better turn) at low speeds. I heard it for the first time today while on was driving towards at exit at a restuarant where I picked up food. The best way I can describe the sound is slightly high-pitched (like a rusty old red wagon toy that's been used too much), and it sounds like it's come from the rear driver's side tire. I also notice that with very light braking, it's gets louder. I also noted in the past when I back out of a place and I lightly tap my brake, I get this really loud harsh noise that sounds like someone is blowing air into a bottle but only more high pitched. I haven't notice any sounds at high speeds (in excess of 35 mph) but then again, road noise could play a factor in that. I'm going to have the car checked out at Meineke this morning to see if it's a brake problem (they give free brake inspections) and I've read numerous guides and suggestions on what it could be. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem and can suggest what it is?

I'm hoping this problem is a simple one and one that doesn't require me shelling out big bucks as I already shelled out about $1700 this spring/summer for problems associated with my Cavalier.

Any information is appreciated.

Also a little bit more information...

The squeaking seems to go away, when I make a turn (when driving at slow speeds) and my braking seems to be as strong as the day I first got my car about 3 years back.

goes away when you make a turn? huh. i thought maybe either a wheel bearing or brakes. check that

do you ever notice that the ones who talk the loudest have the least to talk about?

It was indeed my brakes. I had them checked out Saturday, and apparently my rear brakes had got out of alignment or something to that affect which was causing my front brakes to do all the work. The pads were replaced, they did something to the rotors and adjusted the rear brakes and now my braking is tighter than ever and no more squeaking and at that, my dash has stopped rattling (for now) so got a bonus with getting my brakes repaired.
