I was wonderin ghow often the timing belt/or chain should be replaced? And really, which do we have in the cavy?! SHe's runnin' fine but I just know what a busted timing belt does to your engine and I just don't wanna be caught in that situation.
You dont need to replace it unless your hear abnormal sounds dont stress it, you'll know somethings up if you do have to replace it. Put the money into performance parts not things that you think might go bad, unless your sure something needs fixing dont bother.

Its a chain. You normally dont have to replace it under normal driving conditions.

what if its making a ticking noise, would i need to replace it then? (im not sure if it is the timing chain, but it sounds like its coming from there) and if i replace it will the ticking go away?
the timing chain tensioner I think would need to be replaced. if it's making excessive noise.
Ticking could also be a lifter. (metallic-type clicking) Check your oil level, if it's low top it off and see if the clicking stops. If it does, then it was the lifter and ou have a leak somewhere (or the oil wasn't properly filled)
nope, not a lifter. i used to have another cavy with a lifter making noise, and it sounded different. this i can hear coming from the timing chain, i think. well i hear it around where the pullies are, and its internal, so its not a pulley. oh yea and im talkin about a 2.2 ohv. im hoping that when i replace my tming and chain and tensioner it will go away.
the timing chain in these motors will make some noise got to think its a metal chain on a metal sprocket no coating at all to quite the metal on metal contact

No, its quiet with a new chain and tensioner. The first time I fixed the problem, I replaced the two sprockets, tensioner, and chain. The car didn't make a sound untill about 5000 miles later. The melling tensioner ended up being a piece of crap, so I replaced that one with a GM one and it lasts about 20k or so before it goes bad. I have found that the chain will stretch out too, so you should replace that as well.
Basically, I know every spring break I need to replace the chain and tensioner. Can't wait to buy something new...
^^^^^^ damn that sucks at 60000 mi my chain was still tight as it was at 30000 no noticable slack at all its an Eco though

Yeah, the eco are MUCH more reliable. The old ohv's suck.
