I got this very loud grinding sound from under the hood that started on my way home from work today. Basically when the engine revs up there's that grind but when it revs down, it blasts away like a mofo!
I don't think it can be anything to do with the tranny (which i just had a clutch replaced) cuz I have the clutch punched in or trans outta gear and when I rev it up it's still sounding like @!#$!
I have a 98 cav. 2.4l
It sounds like its comin from under the ignition cover.. and it sounds like a rock in a blender (if you can imagine that)
HELP!
I'm like a calculator.. you can feed me all the bs you want, but I always have the right answer.
id pop off your vavle cover and see if anything is broke

i tnink i kow exactly what ur takling about. it doesnt happen all the tmie but it happens enough. i drive and as i let go of the throttle **grinding noise** until i get back on the throttle. but doesnt happen in every gear. will happen like 65-70% of the time if i'm shifting above 3k rpms. i dont remeber when it started i dont wanna blame it on my underdrive pulley. but could that be crank walk due to the harmonic balance being thrown off by the pulley.

could be the throw out bearing on the clutch.

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....... but some day
I was led to believe that our cars don't get crank walk. but I could be mistaken.
yea i figured out was it was from my exhaust i have somthing vibrating in my resonator and it comes out as a grinding sound. i heard we dont get it but i thought mine was special. sry to jack the thread bud.
u know ur sound is coming from the motor? mine sounded like it was coming from motor till one day i had a bud listen to it while i would rev it up and he point out it came from exhuast. i sounded completely like it was coming from motor.

i would say either alternator or the ac compressor.. ive had the ac compressor start making a clunking/banging noise like there was a quarter on top of my piston. i actually began to think i broke a plug or something got sucked into the cylinders because when i listened from the top it sounded and felt as if it was coming from the top of the engine.. i then cut everything off, and it stopped. tracked it down to AC when i cut the ac on and it started making the noise again. good luck.
