erratic fuel readings
Friday, September 23, 2005 5:11 PM
My 1999 Z24 w/ 2.4L engine is having a problem reading gas as far as the guage goes. It goes from full to 3/4 full alot, and occasionally reads about what I think it should, but never for long and then back to erratic (3/4-full) reading. Is it guage, sender, pump or filter, or wiring. I do have a code but have not gotten it read yet. GM/Chev seem to have all the same problems and wondered what people think before I take it to mechanic.
Thanks,
Sammy

I'd say about 99% of the time it's the fuel sending unit that's defective on most fuel gauges on any make or model or manuf that malfunction.Typically when the gauge reads erracticly or less fuel than u actually have.Oh the fun

Was figuring it was probably send unit, but wanted to see if we're in agreement before I take it anywhere.
Thanks,
sammy.

Well z24sammy

I had problems with improper gas readings as well, Even on my 2000 cavalier it was reading 1/25 of a tank, Then I ran out of gas. Gm also had a recall on that problem as well, It was problem with a faulty sending unit. I had an 89 cavalier 2.8L same thing, I would get an improper gas reading, I replaced the sending unit with a new one, Never had a problem after that.

Good Luck
