Mine is starting to make noises. My friend's 96 cavalier was making noises too, so we changed the whole compressor rather than the clutch only. Much easier but if you have refrigerant in it, than you would have to let it all out to change the compressor. Be carefull that nobody sees you doing that. You don't want to have EPA at your door next morning. After changing the compressor you'll have to refill your system. Jiffy lube or pepboys should do it for about $100. we bought the compressor at a junk yard for $20 at a half-off day sale. If you change the clutch only, post the procedures. I want to know how to change it so that I can change mine too. I don't wanna replace the whole compressor. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem, but luckily i have access to a shop that has an AC unit, that way i can pump out the r-134a refidgerant thats in there and not have to completely refill it, unless you ahve the right tools and experience, dont mess wiht just changing the clutch, jsut buy a new compessor and replace the whoel damn thing, its a lot easier, but when you open up the AC you let all the moisture in the air in, so in other owrds you shoudl replace the condensor also, otherwise all the desicant in there will be shot, dont try to skimp out and do it the cheap way, otehrwise you are going ot kick your self in the ass in a few months and have ot do it over again. You can try to get a new comprssor from a scrap yard, but since this is a common, very common problem, you chance of getting a compressor that works perfectly arent that great, jsut go to autozone or anyother parts store and get a new one or a rebuilt...it will save you a lot of time and anguish...if you have anyother questions...just holla at me...and btw like juan said check your state laws cuz if the epa cathces you you might have a $25,000 and possibly some jail time invovled if someone reports you, atleast thats how it is here in Wisconsin...but good luck man, if worst comes to worst jsut take it in and have a professional do it...

Yeah it'll be fine. Mine as been doing that since I bought the car about two years ago. I just don't feel like spending the money for a new one. Plus my a/c does't hold a charge for too long so I just use the windows most of the time.
