Car Makes Loud Ticking Noise

I have a 96 Sunfire with 2.2L engine. When I first start the car it makes a ticking noise....this noise only occurs when the car is under load (in gear and when I give it gas). This noise is much quieter when my car in is park or neutral and I give it gas. Is this a sign of major engine trouble???

hmmmm sounds like you valves are tapping. Check your oil....you might need to add some oil. You also might be leaking oil....you should check that asap

hey it's a 2.2. make some friends with other 2.2 owner and you'll see that you are not alone. Most of the 2.2 do it. my 91 did it, my father 98 is doing it and an 02 did it when I test drove it at 43 000 miles.

Mine does it too, 97 Sunfire 2.2. At first, I thought it was the Alternator or the serpentine belt. I changed both of them and it still continues. However, if im sitting still, its pretty noticable.

It almost sounds like a tapping noise, I hope that it is not a rod bearing. If it was a rod bearing would the engine make that noise all the time?? Sometimes even after it warms up the noise occurs sometimes, only for a couple seconds at a time. I listened to the engine and it sounded like it was coming from the bottom, although I am by no means a mechanic and it is hard to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. The oil level is fine and the car does not leak/burn a drop of oil. The noise sounds kind of like a mixer beating against a bowl, although it does not sound like a thrown rod, the oil pressure is fine. I will be taking a trip to Florida soon, I can live with the noise as long as my engine does not blow up. Will it hurt the car to run it making this noise?? Can lifter noises sound loud like there is destruction going on in your engine?? Please help!!!!!!

and again i have said it about 10k times now... its the Timing chain. chevy used a nylon tentioner and that is now wore out causeing the chain to have a little slack and now its slapping the timing chain cover... every 2.2 OHV i have EVER heard does it eventially.. but its normal.. if you are conserned.. change the chain, sprockets, tentioner, and gasket... my 97 did it from day one.. i got the car with 89k on it and it did it all the way till i got rid of her at 167k and it stil ran strong... i would change it eventially because the chain could ware out and break and then you would be screwed.... but yea its normal...

Hmmm...there was another similar thread to this one. Most people guessed lifters or bearing noise.

I'm new here, so I guessed I missed your past postings. Mine does it only when its first started in the morning; usu. goes away once its been driven for a while. I would think if it was the tensioner that it would do it all the time, not just when cold.

when its cold its more noticable because the oil is cold.. when it heats up it somewhat quites it down but not fully... if its a 2.2 or 2200 and its ticking.. 9 times out of 10 its the timing chain...

My timing chain makes more noise once the car heats up(even the replacement ones have done this).
I've heard its normal for them to make noise when the car is cold and then gets better with heat.

Velly intellesting. Is the 2.2 OHV motor an interference motor?

I just want to know if I wait until the timing chain goes completely if the head & valvetrain will be OK or if its basically a paperweight at that point.

my ticks like a champ...at first I was bothered...but now I've come to live with it. If anything happens I'll deal with it then, but until then the car runs fine, idles fine, pulls fine, why worry?

You should worry because the chain will break and you will have valves and pistons making friends.

so mine should be the timing chain also, since it comes from around there. if i get a new timing chain and tensioner, will that fix the ticking? at least for a certain time? it really bothers me and like someone mentioned before, people look at u like ur car is effed up.
