The other day, i was in the garage and i noticed that i had a brand new oil filter for my 2.2 ohv, and i was really over due for a oil change. I never actually changed my oil before but i thought the what the hell. So i drained my oil, and i went to change the filter and i can't get it off to save the life of me. I tried from the bottom no go, i tried from the top and no go. I even went out on bought on of those tools and still can't get it off. Id there a trick to it?

Yeah, that has been a pain in my (censored) every time I do it. Unless you have a lift to get the car way off the ground, you will have to do what I do.

I remove the front pass. side tire to get access. That's the only way I've found. While I have it off, I grease the tie rod & ball joint fittings & spray some silicone spray on the CV joint boot.
That's also 1 of the reasons why I run synthetic oil, so I don't have to do it so often. Good luck!

First, it shouldn't be that bad. If it is, you had it on there too tight anyways (which some quickie places do just so they know that it CANNOT fall off whatsoever, leaving them liable). You can get it from either the top or the bottom. I think I did it from the bottom last time. Make sure you have the oil filter wrench the right way. Good luck

I do the same way.

If you cant remove it for the life of you, and all the oil has drained out, Take a screw driver, perferably a flathead, and stab the filter with it. Literally peirce it, all the way through and leave the driver there. YOu can now use it as leverage to remove your stubborn filter.

I had good luck with oil filter pliers. I think I paid 6 bucks at Wally World.

God bless America.

Those are the one's i dread the most working at Jiffy Lube, thats the 2200 coupled with an auto tranny. The 3 spd gives you more room to get in from underneith, but the 4 spd is the worse, you have to reach in from the control arm area to get in. Im so glad that the one we got today was an 02 with the Getrag, far easier to get in there if she's a manual. My Sunfire GT is a breeze though, filter in the front, wide open, and the plug in the back, doesnt matter if it was a Manual or an Auto (mine's a 5spd).

Some of the best ideas that have been offered

previously :

To remove from the top, first lift the computer out of

the way. That's the one that sits directly over the

oil filter. Takes something like a 1/2" and a 9 mm wrench

to remove two nuts in order do this.

If the filter is a PF-47, be sure to replace with a PF-52

It is only a little longer, but adds greatly when getting

a little more 'grip' when spinning off or on.

As an aside, I watched at my Chevrolet dealer....

They were using some kind of suction machine to

get the oil out of a 2002 Cavalier with automatic.

I didn't see them even TRY to change the filter.

BEWARE !
