I've got a 1996 Cavalier with the base 2.2 engine and 5 speed manual trans.
Do the axles just pull out of the transmission, or do I need to disconnect something at the transmission end to do so. I've tried pulling them out with no luck from the hub end (without looking inside at the transmission) but they seem stuck (either that or I'm a real weenie, which is possible).
I want to pull both sides, then remove the engine and transmission in one unit, it appears that the driver side axle has to come completely out to clear the bolted on suspension crossmember (the stub where the arched strap bolts on that runs to the front radiator support).
Also, the body strips that fit on top of the side glass windows (2 door model), can they be removed? I've got the whole car gutted and I can't see any nuts and bolts that are holding the thing on (perhaps there are tabs that click in to the sheet metal?). I would like to remove them if possible, without breaking them.
Also, has anyone purchased an adapter from Dellow Auto in Australia? If so, how is the quality of their products? I'm interested in their 3800 V6 to Ford C4 transmission adapter (using an Intense flex plate and custom converter).

dont just pull on the axel or you will pull it apart, i have a dent puller with a chain atachment i put the chain around the part that goes in the tranny and give it a little tug, or i take it out of gear and put a pry bar behind the part that goes in the tranny and gradually tap out the axel, spin it with your hand and hit it out from all the sides. they are in there pretty good sometimes. but the will come out without removing anything from the tranny, another thing make sure it out of the spindle before pulling it out....

i grabbed mine right near where they hook to the tranny and just tugged and they came out, but this is on the getrag tranny, im willing to guess that the izuzu is the same

I have got the same car as you, 2.2L '96 manual. I tried to pull it and it didn't work, so I pulled the whole trany with the drive axles attached (that IS being a real weenie and it will wreck your drive axle bearings too).
I ended up putting a 600mm long - 35mm dia. wrecking bar on it and mashing it hard with my the palm of my hand, it popped out like magic. The key is to find something metal that will not bend. The large screwdriver I usually use was a little too flexible. You have to have something solid, but hit it with something soft. It a bit of a trick.
Beavers in Toronto? Guess your gonna tell us about the polar bears walking down Young St. next right? Or....was that beaver is commonly found there?

Thanks for the tip, I found a wheel nut removal wrench/pry bar in the trunk of my wife's Saturn that looks like it would do the trick.
BTW, I'm in Pickering on the other side of the GTA.
There are plenty of "beavers" in my neighbourhood.
