Okay here is the deal. I have a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L Automatic. A couple of days ago I noticed that the nut on the lower prong of the starter had fallen off somewhere, and the wire had come off, so I put the wire back on the starter, the car started up and then I drove to work. I had the same problem after work, but an easy fix none-the-less. I figured to remedy this problem I would just solder the wire to the prong. I know maybe not a good idea, the only thing is I noticed an extra wire (black wire with a ring terminal on it) not knowing where this came from I figured it must be from the starter.
This morning I go outside to start my car, started up fine, but the starter kept trying to crank the engine round. I figured it must be the starter itself, so I switched out the starter, with a brand spanking new one. At which point I hooked three thicker wires up to the first/top prong, and two thinner wires up to the second/bottom prong. I was certain that there is only supposed to be one wire on the bottom prong, but when I tested the starter without either of the two wires, it would crank over. So I am assuming the wires are supposed to be there. I went to work, than came out of work to go home, started the car up, same problem, starter kept cranking even with the engine running.
So my dad comes to where I work, and we mess around with some wires, and finally get it to start up. I'm not sure what my dad did, to get it to start, or how he has the wires hooked up, but I am guessing that it isn't right. I will takes pictures sometime tomorrow or the next day for you guys to look at. I got it home, shut the car off, waited about 5 minutes, than started it up again only to find the starter trying to crank the engine over while the engine is running. So I have a couple of question.
1. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on here?
2. Does anyone have any pictures of a similar starter that they could post?
3. How many wires are supposed to be on the starter?
4. There are two prongs/studs on the starter for wires, which wires go where, and how many on each prong?
5. Has anyone ever heard of this problem before, on any car?

theres 3 wires i believe. i cant quite remember which goes where. i got a haynes manual at home and i can find out for you when i get home.
I checked my haynes manual, and it says there are two red and one purple. Well the purple I don't have, and I have two red wires. One goes to a relay, and the other goes to the battery. I think I may have figured the problem out, I am just on my way out the door to go get a new relay for the starter. I checked the ignition switch on the steering column and that wasn't it. The only things I can think of are the wiring on the starter itself, and the relay.....so it is just a matter of getting a new relay and seeing if that fixes the problem, if it doesn't it must mean it is the wiring on the starter.

Does the Purple go to the relay operating coil and the Red to the solenoid?.
It seems as if it is the GM recall circuit for the wiring overheating in the starting circuit.
This wirng will not be in the manual.
Just a thought
