Steering Fluid EVERYWHERE!!
Wednesday, September 07, 2005 6:43 PM
So i was changing my spark plugs and oil tonight and i noticed that my power steering res. was covered in a fluid type stuff. So i opened it and the res was filled to the tippie top and the fluid its a dark red color? and it looks like so much came out that it leaked down the side of the engine to the bottom mount. Whats goin on here? is there something wrong? My steering does make a creakin whinnig noise when turning.

Take some fluid out (perhaps using a Pela oil extractor or the like, or just a turkey baster) down to the proper level and drive around a little. See what happens. If the resivoir is too ful, when pressure builds up (due to heat) the cap will let fluid blow out. Notice it is a pressure cap (like on a radiator). You should be more clear though, has anything been done to the power steering pump? Have you added any fuild lately? Have you noticed any steering problems?

This reminds me of when my ps pump blew on my old Z24 with the 3.1L in it.

The seal spring a leak and started dripping fluid. When it got low, the rack/pump would make some groaning noises and then I'd fill it back up.

The leak got worse and worse so I was filling it up more than once a week.

I was a poor student at the time so I figured I could just keep that up for a while rather than getting it fixed.

When it finally went... it took the alternator with it and made a hell of a mess!!

I popped the hood and the fluid was just pouring out onto the belt, which slung it up like a freakin' fountain. I had to jump out of the way. Enough fluid went into the alternator to completely kill it and I had a much more expensive repair bill than I otherwise would have had.

Fun times!

Anyhow... as said... has anything been done recently? Was any fluid added or anything?

have you tried changing the fluid? suck out the old fluid with a turkey baster and refill it. then start the car and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times and suck out that fluid and refill. repeat this until the fluid is as clean in the res as it came out the bottle.

see ya!

Sometimes the power steering will have ATF in it which is red.
