Everytime my AC goes on I hear a sort of tapping/clicking noise coming from the engine bay, the AC works fine and the engine runs fine with or wihout AC on. Is this normal?
I believe it is the bearings in your a/c compressor. You a/c compression in on its last legs. Mine lasted 2 months when it started making a grinding/tingly noice.

Its a 2001 Cavalier with only 57k miles, I sure hope my AC compressor is not dying. I have never owned a 4 cylinder only V6 and I think maybe its just normal, it makes a tick noise.
I have 91K miles on my 04, It was been making that sound for 3 days now. And now, it sounds like a tank driving by. It is shot.

New Picture comming this summer.
I have owned 3 J's and all of my ac compressors all had a strange noise. You could always tell when the ac was on!!

i have a 2.2 and this just now happened to mine...it used to make the noise then stop then make the noise then stop, now it makes the noise more times than it doesnt....but my question is....this is my second compressor in 2 years....what could be wrong with my car that would make this happen twice in 2 years...???
I have the same grinding/tingly noise in my '95 now. Can you replace the bearings on these or do i need a whole new compressor, If so i think ill just get the bypass
Is it just a single tap/click every few minutes? If it is then its just your A/C clutch engaging and disengaging and it completely normal.
yeah generally when the AC compressor bearing is going it sounds like a chain clanging noise and it usually makes noise when the AC is off. when you turn the AC on the noise should go away. if it is not as described by me above, it is probably what Tinkles suggested and is the AC clutch kicking in and out as normal. your AC compressor comes on in the wintertime too when you have the defrost on and such.

depends, some people say that you can fix it by tapping the bearing towards the compressor. some people say you need to replace the bearing, some say replace the whole compressor. some people who hate the noise and dont care about AC either get the bypass pulley or bypass it with a smaller belt.

To replace the compressor your going to have to take it to a garage. Because the A/C is going to have to be evacuated.
I have a new bearing sitting here for those compressor's. Our old '96 Z-24 had the same compressor bearing issue but we sold the car before I got a chance to replace the bearing.

I'ma having same problem and i'm thinking to buy the whole thing and replace it. I don't know much about cars. Mechanics are asking $350 just for labor. How hard is to replace comressor w/clutch ?
Thanks for your help.
When I had my 98 Z it would make the noise when my AC was off...
well, whether AC is on or off, it makes noise. It stops when engine stops. I removed the belt and engine sounds juat fine. It is either Ac clutch or compessor.
Quick question. Does anyone have the part number for the smaller belt and or the bearings? Please and Thank you

I have a new bearing sitting here that we bought for our old '96 Z-24 but never installed it before selling the car.
