2.4L Wizards Needed . . .
Monday, August 15, 2005 11:48 AM

OK, first off I have a '99 2.4L cav, and I know my way around a car. Almost all of my internals have been upgraded (but that is beside the point). Im getting a ticking sound out of my engine. My first thought was that i had possibly blown a valve spring. So i ordered the replacement valves and springs, and got to work pulling the head off. When i got the head off, all of my valves were fine, and all still looked brand new (only had about 30 minutes of run time on them). The next suggestion i got was to check the wrist pins, as they may create a sound simular to a blown valve spring. So thats what I did, pulled the rest of the motor out of the car, and began dissasembling it further. Ive got my motor compleely apart and still cannot find a single broken, damaged or even worn part. Everything seems to be fine. I dont have any clue what else to look for?! Anyone have any suggestions? Any thoughts would be appreciated - no matter how abstract.

I suggested in another post timing chain but if its getting louder as the car keeps going perhaps lifter or 2 ticking? did the lifters appear to be in good shape? and did you keep them in order and replace them from there original position when it was re-built before? if the lifters are moved you can have this ticking sound, the only other thing I can thing of is really bad........im not sure whata spun rod bearing sounds like though but it is quite the common problem on our engines.

all of my Valves and Springs are brand new. Although they may still be the problem.
As for the timing chain / tensioner, the noice appeards to be comming from the drivers side of the car, so im gonna have to rule them out.
Also, I spun the main crank bearing on my stock motor, and it did not make a simular noise. It could be thou. . . my bottom end is still together, ill pop off my oil pan and oil pump tonight and take a closer look at the bearings jsut to make sure.

Jago N - hold in there man, ive already got my motor apart and have tons of spare parts. mabey i can get to the source of this problem and save you a few bucks so you dont have to do more than you have too!

I`m from London, I`ll know once I hear Jago's car if its the timing chain or not, I may be able to diagnose the problem, hopefully he sees this post or the other one I want to meet up tomorrow.

Does it sound more like a lifter ticking or something like a piston ring. You said LH side of the car was the most noticable. But are you sure its not coming from the tranny?? Where did you pin point the most noise coming from?? Did you just do a complete rebuild on the motor or is it just the valvetrain that has 30mins of run time

the motor was completely rebuilt . . . but the bottom end as a little more time on it. 50km tops. it sounds like its comming from the drivers side valves on the intake cam. but i had the head open and off, and i couldnt find anything wrong with it. do you think it could be piston rings making a simular sound?

Well natedawg

My guess would be I would take a look at the condition of youre belt tenstioner pulley if the rubber grommet wears out it makes a clicking sound. Even with youre fuel injection rails to injectors samething They are supposed to make a clicking sound its normal in the fuel system. I would look into the condition of youre belt tenstioner.

Good Luck

Yep piston rings do make ticking noises, and this noise will be heard at top and from underneith..but mainly on top(from what I've noticed). Its kinda hard to explain but the ticking noise from a cam and a ring are a little different ..the tone and the length

Completely differnet location in the engine bay, opposite side or motor, but thanx anyways.
