Ticking noise from a 2.4L
Sunday, August 14, 2005 11:43 AM
now i have searched the site a bit andanyone who has a ticking noise is from a 2.2 ohv engine.
well i have a 99 2.4l and i got this ticking noise and thats was months ago, but it was when i was low on oil but filling uip didnt change it. the ticking well not go away and it get louder till the engine the enigne is warm. then dont go any louder. but the ticking speed up as the rpms go up.
but it annoying as hell, you can hear it at lights and its embarrassing...lol
can someone till me a direct awnser to this question, or could it be several things
ive heard so far it could be the valve, timeing belt (or chain not sure what it is called. or the tensioner for the belt
please help me out

theres a good chance it's probably your valves, and they just need to be adjusted.

do you think it would cost more then 300 to fix this problem if i pay JUST for parts and not labour?? dumb question i know but i just would like a estimate if anyone could

im not really too sure of a price on a cavi. on a civic i would know because i could do it by myself, but sorry. i havent on a cavalier yet. but exactly what is going on with your car, is it just a ticking noise from the top of your motor or is it coming from the bottom of the motor? and how loud is it, are you loosing oil, little more info.

well it the sound is on the top of the motor for sure
i believe the noise is by the water pump or the timing belt..
the noise is not very loud at startup. but it gets louder as the engine warms and by the time its running normal temperture it is noticable, not too to loud but noticeable for sure. as im accelerating and the rpms are rising the ticking will get faster and faster up untill like 3200 rpms then you can barely hear it...probably cause the engine is getting too loud.but say if hold the pedal lets say at 2500 rpms....the ticking will go alot faster but stays at a steady quick tick, but if i hold the pedal at 2000 rpms the ticking will slow down a bit then stay steady once it slows down so far....make sense?
i check my oil like every 15 and i might have to put in a qtr bottle of oil in every 30 days. so it eats a little bit of oil.
im saving up money as we speak, i will have saved $500 to fix this problem, my uncle is a mechanic and he is goin to fix it for me. i hope 500 is enough for the parts illl need
i just want to know what i should replace so i dont waste 500 dollars to find out i replaced the wrong part and it is still ticking lol.

it just sounds like a tappet knock...adjusting the rocker arms shound work...at least i know it would if you had pushrods...with overhead cams...i am not sure how to adjust them either...but any good garage should be able to do it...and should be nowhere near 500 if that is the only prob. just tell them that is all you want done for now and see if that fixes the prob.

hope it is that easy
i wont bring it to a shop jsut because its like 45 + an hour
so im gonna let my uncle take it and fix it, he is a mechanic so i trust him, and cost less labour

Before you have someone take half of your motor apart to fix it you might want to read the post in this section called Seafoam You may be hearing a valve sticking and this Seafoam helps to reduce carbon buildup in the combustion chambers. Just something to try before you have an expensive bill. Never know, it might work.

I just fixed the timing chain on my 2.4L it was ticking its an expensive job for a mechanic and also if it has something to do with adjusting the valves your in for a good $500+ in labour unless you do it yourself. I just checked your profile your from London ontario..... I`m in London too if I heared your engine running I could tell you if it was the same as what mine was. If it is timing chain me and my buddiy will cut you a deal fixing it, we changed the cams on my car and his, one of my timing chain plastic guides was broken in half which was most likely causing the ticking.

Thats a pretty tempting offer lol, I`m not even working right now, if there was some way to get a sound clip of your engine I would know if it is the timing chain or something else, for you anthony does the sound appear at start up then go away sometimes or is it soemthing that gets louder as you drive?

Ticking noise..haha that doesn't narrow it down at all unless heard to pin point the noise from where its coming from. I mean thats the most comman complaint that can include something like the timing chain jumping a tooth and messing up the timing(causes noise along with other problem)...slack in the chain, a piston ring, a sticker or something rubbing on a pulley. Even from the tranny you can have ticking, say from the slave cylinder(kinda like a ticking growl).
Your best bet would be to pin point where the noise is for sure coming from, and i don't mean "It's coming from the motor" or "It's coming from the left side of the engine bay".
Take a long screw driver, fit it to your ear, place the other end to the motor,tran..etc and listen to the vibration/ticking through the screw driver to your ear to pin point where on the motor, tranny..etc..the noise is coming from.
Then once told where the noise is the loudest, is when someone can really help you without throwing in someone kinda guess that would send you in the wrong direction

I thought you didnt want to lol oh well, yeah we could go to the track sometime, I dunno if I can run my car until I fix the tranny though, prolly not worth it anyways I have to slow shift 1st to 2nd so I dont grind which will kill my times. Do you hit sparta often?
