Need precise analog multimeter, where to find?
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 12:54 PM
I need to measure power spikes from an oxygen sensor, but digital meters don't seem to react fast enough. So, I'm looking for an analog meter that can read at least .1V DC changes fairly accurately. Anybody know where I can find one? I see a few that can do AC, but no DC...
TIA

Your trying to monitor an O2 sensor. Well they switch about five times a second if they are working correctly. Faster than a meter can keep up with.

You need an engine scope. What it does is it lays out voltage going on the top and down axis, and then the time in seconds is on the lower axis. You can slow it down so you can read it better, or watch it in real time, but wont be able to read it to well.

I know your thinking great where can I get one, well they cost about $40,000, yes $40k, at least the one I use did.

And naturally a normal oscilliscope wouldn't work. I know people have done this before. grrrr... quote from 12v.org:
"you can connect the positive lead of a voltmeter (an old-fashioned analog one works best) to the black wire that comes out of the sensor, and the negative lead of the meter to a good ground. With the car at idle, the voltage coming off the sensor should vary from a little over 0v to a little under 1v every few seconds. If the voltage range is less than about .6v, the sensor needs to go. I have a SUNPRO by actron and it cost me 89.99 at advance auto about 6 or more years ago. The model number is cp7678.And yes u can check ur o2 sensor with this!!U do have to remove it and use like a protane torch as they specify in the book but,it will show the tolerances.Check out actron online, they should have one to see,but I know advance does carry there stuff so does auto zone.
