leaking coolant(hoping its not waterpump)
Sunday, July 24, 2005 5:53 PM
ok well my 98 z24 just started leaking coolant the other day. it had been disappearing for awhile now but it just started leaking externally. The leak is on the drivers side of the engine but i cant pinpoint exactly where. The main thing i am worried about is the waterpump. I thought that the waterpump is on the passengerisde of the engine in with the timing chain etc. When the pump goes bad does it leak on that side or does it leak on the drivers side? I checked all the hoses and they seem to be ok the only other thing i cna think of is the thermostat althought im not sure that would cauase it to leak fluid. All im looking for is for someone to tell me its not the waterpump so i can sleep tonight i also want them to be telling the truth

Thermostat is on the water pump side of the motor... underneath the exhaust manifold. At least, that's where it is on my 2.4L, even though it's a 99 that should be the same as the 96-98's.

Doesn't sound like water pump to me. That would definitely come out on the passenger side. Unless it's spraying... lol.. different issue.

Could be the upper hose to the rad... that's where I have a leak at the moment... it sucks trying to find it, no clearance to see anything.

yeah upon closer inspection i looked at where the coolant lines go and they go into a black plastic adapter that says right on it. "Thermostat on waterpump". The really weird part now is that it seems to only leak when the car isnt running.

i just had this too, check the radiator, chance are that either the rad has a hole or the line is broken somewhere but if its leaking bad, its gotta be the rad. Is the radiator rather old? I just replaced mine, it was the factory installed one. 126,000 miles on mine.

my radiator is still the orignal with 160,000 miles on it. But the leak is somewhere close to the drivers side of the engine and further back.

its probally a water seel that busted, thats what mine just got fixed for, is it around the right side of your engine by the exhaust manifold?
